I walked over the Pyrenees twice in mid-April. It was quite chlilly both times. Since most of the walk is uphill, I was plenty warm much of the time. I did stay at Orisson both times, and found it chilly there too, but was able to warm up with soup etc. I don't remember being cold at night even...
I tried to do this in 2019. My recall is, that there was a good chance that the bus from Burgos would not get there in time for their vespers. And of course the need to spend the night there. I decided that it was not doable in my time frame.
But I would love to do that another time!
You have been given some excellent suggestions. One thing I might add: you may want to walk to Ages, a few kilometers past San Juan de Ortega. It's a lovely village with good accommodations. And that much closer to Burgos the next day.
There is not much going on at San Juan de Ortega. I stayed...
@igailfh, Enjoy your journey on the Chemin Le Puy! My first trail on Walking4fun was the Arizona Trail. I have spent lots of time in Arizona, and thoroughly enjoyed that 'walk' too.
I'm jealous of your lovely summery weather. I'm doing much of my walking in my apartment, as we have been frozen...
Hello all, I just finished the Chemin le Puy today. I'm now off to walk the Portugues. Coming after you, Canterbury Pilgrim (Jeff Crawley)!
Stayin'Alive
I walked the Camino Frances twice starting in April. Each walk I was grateful to have a silk liner plus a lightweight sleeping bag. It was freezing coming over the Pyrenees both times. And the coldest night I ever spent was in Sahagun in May in 2016.
I am really enjoying the Le Puy walk! So much so that I'm considering it for my next Camino. I'm a bit over 50% finished. I really love closing out my day by inputting my steps.
I've been walking with Walking4fun since late May. I've completed the Arizona Trail (US) and the Camino Frances. I'm now about a quarter into the Chemin Le Puy. I've totaled around 1500 miles (2414 km). I now average about 12 km per day.
Since we are now into the snowy and icy phase of winter...
I've always joked that I'm part bear. And from mid-December to probably mid-March, my energy level is zapped. Finally I'm learning to roll with the punches, so to speak. This is my circadian rhythm. And it's in my DNA. Clearly!
This was one of my favorite places on my first Camino. My second, I was walking with some others and it was not convenient to spend a night there. I won't make that mistake again.
I pray they have a blessed Christmas and new year.
I've been away for a week but am approaching Santiago (my Walking4Fun name is stayin'alive). Once I finish, I'm not sure what my next route will be. I've already done the Arizona Trail.
Jeff, I saw that you updated -- I'm now just behind you. I too walked up to O'Cebreiro in 2016. A magical place! I didn't find the walk up too bad, but then I had trained in mountains. Now that I'm a flatlander, it's a different story.
I doubt if I'll make it all the way up today, I may have...
I stayed at the Albergue de Santa Cruz in Sahagun in 2016 and 2019. In 2016 it was the worst experience on my pilgrimage. I found that the management had changed, and had a completely opposite experience in 2019. I would now say that it's one of the best stays on the Meseta. I was in lots of...
Oooh, cafe con leche with Jeff! What's not to like?
Having lived in Arizona and spent a lot of time walking in the desert, I've danced with the snakes!
