Need something to do before Camino

You probably need two overnights in Lourdes which gives you a full day to poke around. It’s an interesting town.

Need something to do before Camino

Lourdes is an easy train ride from Bayonne. It’s an interesting pilgrimage town, but of a different sort than you’ll find on the Frances.

    Weather in early may

The combination of the two should work. The only way to see if a jacket is rainproof is to wear it in a long shower. 😉

    Weather in early may

I walked through snow and freezing rain at the top of the Napoleon Route on May 1st, 2018. Last year in early June I walked through a cold, driving rain (thunder storms) on the same stage. Really cold weather is unlikely, but it happens. It's best to be prepared. Layers of wool under a light...

Rethinking my CF-ish route after Burgos (and I start in 7 days!)

You don’t need to skip the entire Meseta — from Burgos walk three days to Fromista and take the train from there to Leon or Astorga. That will give you a sense of the Meseta.

    Meals in Roncesvalles, worth it?

Dinner. Yes. (There really is no other choice unless you want to eat off the bar menu at the hotel). Picnic. Lots of places to eat along the way the next day - and small shops where you can buy a picnic a la cart Breakfast - IMO, No. I would walk to Burgette and stop at the cafe at the...

What is your favorite (affordable) restaurant on the Camino Frances?

La Cancela in Santo Domingo de la Calzada and the slightly more expensive Los Cabelleros, both near the cathedral, are excellent (~Eu 30-35 with wine and deserts).

Stay in SJPP overnight or start for Orisson

I’ve done that on my second Camino — it works. Just let Orisson know you will be late. Dinner starts about 18:00. You will miss the fun of seeing SJPdP and the pilgrim vibe,

Favorite Parador in Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Ditto parador by Cathedral, but don’t have them do your laundry. The cost is outrageous.

Planning My Camino on the French Way: May 2025

Hi, in 2018 I left SJPdP on May 1st and had a cold wind with light snow and freezing rain near the top of the Napoleon route. The rest of the walk was mostly in shorts and tee shirts. No special gear was needed, except wool glove liners and a watch cap to cover the ears. Just make sure you...

    Albergues in Pamplona and SJPDP

There are several cafes just outside the Atocha station where you can have a late breakfast / lunch while you burn a couple hours waiting for the train. It's the low stress way to get to Pamplona.

    Albergues in Pamplona and SJPDP

Chuck, I'll copy the notes from my walking plan earlier this year in June: ~ Train to Pamplona --> From Madrid Atocha Station departs 14: 50, arrives Pamplona 18:22 Note: Schedule may have changed. You can book on-line at renfe.com. We had to book first class tickets on the train...

    Meals in Roncesvalles, worth it?

Breakfast in Burguete (cafe just as you enter town) is very good. After the 3 km walk from Roncesvalles your ready for coffee.

Special Compostela for pilgrims walking longer distances?

It's easy to understand the economics of the idea, but I wonder what Jesus would think 😉

Pamplona to Puente de la Reina (24 km)

The day you arrive in Pamplona get a stamp and walk on immediately to Cizur Minor. It takes 5 km off the next day. And as Alex mentioned above there are places to stop after the Alt de Perdon and before Puenta la Reina if you want to keep the day to 15km.

Recommendations (Leon to Santiago) Frances - towns for rest days, and places with pilgrim services

Some suggestions. 1. Towns for rest days: Molenaseca - sit in the park and swim in the river. Samos - visit the monastery. Astorga - see Cathedral, Gaudi Palace, and Roman Museum (Museo Romano La Ergast) 2. Albergues: Vega de Valcarce - Albergue El Paso (clean and comfortable, lovely place...

Warm clothing for a late April departure?

I walked in snow and freezing rain at the Col before Roncesvalles on May 1, 2018. As others have said layers are the key but don't forget a light wool watch cap and gloves.

Weather predicament at SJPP - which route is safest?

Trecile offers really sound advice. In May 2018 I crossed the Col in snow, sleet and rain. I couldn't locate the road route and so descended the trail through the forest which I had taken the year before without difficulty. But, this time the trail was wet and muddy. Not 50 meters from the...

What is between Sarria and Santiago? And Muxia?

Pension Mar de Frisia is a very nice place to stop in A Brea. https://www.mardefrisia.es/ It's owned by a very nice lady who grew up in Texas before returning to her native Spain. Rooms are very nice. There's a pool and a good breakfast is included in the room price. Only draw back was...
