That night in the church attic, with the communal meal, and the late night spiritual service, was indeed the highlight of my Camino. There were many other great albergues, but this one was the one that touched my heart the most.
Doable but you might feel deprived of the comradeship of the road. I feel in with one group and then another, with similar speeds, and adjusted my daily mileage to enjoy meeting the people if not at the same albergue, then in the same hamlet at least and socialize.
I stayed there overnight in mid-October 2018, it was clean, nice, had a computer for me to use, and the pilgrims meal (shared meal only, no shared prep or cleaning, alas) was a heartwarming experience. The place is small, not much to explore. The chairs outside are good to relax and have a...
My best wishes and my humble thankx for your service, especially in this cold season. The night in Granon in October 2018 was the most healing night during my Camino.
In Triacastela, I got a very effective shoulder and back massage in the salon next to the laundromat for 25 Euros for 30 minutes. It felt indeed like a "milagro."
The Bierzo area white wines are delightful. I went to the bodega in Camponaraya with an American couple (who had been there before). Very tasty and cheap.
I arrived in Santiago on the evening of last Thursday, went to Faro/Finistere on Friday, and flew back yesterday. My wife picked me up at JFK, we made it to Albany by 6:30pm, and I still had time to sleep-mow my jungle-like lawn. I am tired but happy.
Mine was a tad more painful--a wasp hid in the art clay I was drinking wine from and stung me on the lip. But a physician among my walk mates gave me strong anti-histamines and after 3 days I looked normal again.
I did the first 230 miles from StJPdP in October, ending in Boadilla, and will resume Part II, arriving in Boadilla on Sunday night and stepping back on the path on Monday morning. I'm from Albany, NY, and look forward to meet great walk mates, as I did the first part.
The night at Beilari helped a lot--I met most people again and again during the way and we became great walkmates. But I also met others also who were not at Beilari, right from Day 1 in Express Bourricot, then during the looong walk to Roncevalles and afterwards. As long as your heart is open...
I so agree. I only did the first half, so can't say anything yet about the albergues after Fromista. I loved Beilari in StJpdP, Maribel Roncal in Cizur Menor, En El Camino in Boadilla, but the one my heart longs to relive again and again is that beautiful evening and night at San Juan Bautista...
I will be in a similar situation on Monday May 27, with my flight to the USA leaving 10:20 AM. I welcome any information on transit times, and experiences getting a early flight from Santiago. You can PM me.
I walked StJPdP to Roncevalles the first day and it was strenuous, but OK. It's a paved road mostly. And I'm 62. The big thing is, I stayed at a hostel with communal dinner (Beilari) and started recognizing people while walking--also people from the Bourricot van. That helped a lot. We were all...
How was it? I left StJPdP on the dawn of October 6 (having spent the night at Beilari) and arrived in Boadilla del Camino on Friday the 19th. It was a beautiful journey, with only a few drizzly days. I met great people. I hope to finish in May 2019.
I feel your pain--meeting great people during my first 14 days (till Boadilla, rest in 2019) was a wonderful experience, the daily routine at home was a downer, but I am in touch with my Camino mates, and readjusted. A (former) friend walked the entire 32 days, came back changed, and cut a lot...
What a great way to start your Camino. For me, it was when my colleague Phil Kiernan gave me a donativo, thanking me for the opportunity to support a pilgrim. I was bawling. Buen Camino!
