    Cruz de Ferro

@Camino Chrissy ... I had to kind of laugh at your first picure of the "hippie shop". I don't think that is even the same building. The original as I recall it was simply an old 2 story building with a simple sign nailed on wall. The stairs and porch were falling apart. The inside...

    Cruz de Ferro

In 2009 there was a muddy rutted street (Foncebadon) and a hippie like coffe shop/primitive albergue in a derelict building on the left side. Everything else was abandoned and unused. I loved it. The next couple of times it had a bit of repair...but still the atmosphere. The first time I saw...

Searching for a camino buddy May 2024!

I would echo Trecile...wait until you start your adventure and you can take a few days to see who you will feel comfortable with... walking for a month. Prearranged connections with people you have not met can often lead to uncomfortable situations if you find you are not compatible.

Cruz de Ferro landscaping work - Gronze article

The end gets closer every year. There is very little left on the CF that resembles my early walks. It is a nostalgic and sad loss for many of us. On the other hand...those who are newer to the camino have no idea of what they have missed.

A question for camino historians or those who walked the Francés a long time ago.

Roland....this may be something you can help with. @Bradypus

How many times have you walked the Camino Frances (more than half way)?

@Tincatinker has expressed my thoughts very well. I have walked the Camino Frances 5 times..once from LePuy. My first walk on the CF was in 2009 and my last in Winter 2016. I have no urge to return to the CF route or the experience it has morphed into. I would rather keep my memory intact...

Sahagún--One of those random memorable Camino moments

@Bob Howard ....Did you ever find the reason for the band? Somehow...they just don't have the look of a Spanish band. Actually, I am sure they must be a town group.

Cruz de Ferro - What is its history, and what happens to all those stones?

The photo of Foncebadon circa 1920 (minus the mule) is much like I remember it in 2009 and in 2010 except it seems to have a bit more roof cover in 1920. https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/attachments/1690198237802-png.153445/

Cruz de Ferro - What is its history, and what happens to all those stones?

It is obvious we disagree in all areas of the discussion. I recall the village starting in March 2009 and then for several following years until the "remodel". The "new inhabitants" of the village are mostly those who brought the commercialization and marketing with them. So be it.....the...

Cruz de Ferro - What is its history, and what happens to all those stones?

The destruction of the historic buildings and the paving of the whole town along with turning the area into a tourist attraction represents the loss that many of us feel about the Camino. It is simply not the same experience. The astounding changes to Foncebadon are a visual reminder of how...

Cruz de Ferro - What is its history, and what happens to all those stones?

The transformation and paving of the Heritage Site of Foncebadon is the most disappointing thing I have witnessed anywhere in the name of commercial gain. Sadly, those who missed this village before really did miss a historic site.

Cruz de Ferro - What is its history, and what happens to all those stones?

@Bradypus.....How did your experience in 1990 compare with the description in @Kathar1na post #71, above? You were there just a year later.

    Hydration pack or water bottles?

I do not use a bladder simply on the issue of carrying more water than I can use during a day when bottle water/fountains are available. Keep in mind that water weighs 1 kilo (2.2 lbs) per liter. Carrying a 2.5 liter bladder of water weighs 5.5 pounds. I often see people with much bigger...

Cruz de Ferro - What is its history, and what happens to all those stones?

Actually, most Pilgrims who leave a rock or other treasure do not return for a year or so. They probably would not be aware of changes since they last passed by. Of course, serial pilgrims may return more often but are less likely to continue the rock thing or they are aware that the rocks are...

Cruz de Ferro - What is its history, and what happens to all those stones?

@trecile ….you may want to consider making this thread a sticky to preserve it for future pilgrims and discussions. It contains some great research by @Kathar1na and @Rebekah Scott along with others that should be retained

Cruz de Ferro - What is its history, and what happens to all those stones?

The actual history of the site is fairly recent and disputed as a “sacred” site by many. Perhaps @Kathar1na or @dougfitz can repost ( I think I remember their posts) on the subject. There are many somewhat conflicting stories on the origin and history.

Cruz de Ferro - What is its history, and what happens to all those stones?

Like our Dog friend,Henry (and his human pet David), I have watched the backhoe and dump truck reduce the pile of rocks and overflow several times over the years. Sadly, it may come as a bit of a shock to learn that several locals make it a regular (daily?) practice to come by car and “mine”...

LIVE from the Camino FRANCÉS: Flies, spiders, isolation & roommates: not what I expected!

@VNwalking Well said Vera. You captured the feeling of many of us perfectly. Thank you. It really is sad that any reference to the choice of actually carrying their kit when physically able and simply walking all or most of the route is immediately labeled judgement by those who choose to...

LIVE from the Camino FRANCÉS: Flies, spiders, isolation & roommates: not what I expected!

I think posts in earlier threads indicate that the OP has started from Sarria....which makes it surprising that she is encountering few pilgrims.
