I can't believe the fantastic weather you had in Galicia. We went (biked) in June and were wet for the whole week from Astorga to Santiago. It actually made me rather unhappy. If the weather had been fair, it would have been so much more enjoyable on the bike.
Anyways, I haven't been here in...
Orbigo
I have to say that if I had the choice, I would start in Hospital de Orbigo... It's about 10 km from Astorga and is a lovely town with some of the most beautiful albergues we met on the way. And from there to Astorga it goes through lovely red landscape, no longer along the road.
Astorga
I would start in Astorga. True, between Leon and Astorga it is flat, but it is also the least attractive part of the Camino. I would not hesitate to skip it and enjoy the what lies after Astorga.
food
Sure. We didn't really expect to wine and dine en route.
It was a general observation for Spain in general, because we spent 5 days travelling back along the camino and then down to Tarragona (by car) and it didn't get any better, regardless of whether the meal cost 10 EUR or 30 EUR...
Food
Yeah, but I'm a gourmet. I love cooking and tasting and savouring new flavours and tastes. So for me it was good fuel, but I was hoping for a better culinary experience.
food
And the best thing we had, in my opinion, was an empanada with meat from a small bakery in Sarria. It was INCREDIBLE! When we were driving back from Santiago, we stopped there again and bought another one, this time with tuna. I liked the meat one better, but both were really fantastic...
food
I have to admit that I was not too impressed with meals at restaurants (menu del dia or menu de peregrino). Some were certainly better than others, but all of them had a tendency to be horrifically greasy. And french fries are NOT my favourite side order, in fact I never make them at home...
:-(
Tell me about it! I've been back for a week now. At first, I didn't really feel it because I was flooded by work during the first 4 days after returning, and didn't really have time to think about it. But it set in over the weekend and now it's awful. I miss the Camino so much! We've been...
skipping
I rather disagree. We returned two days ago from biking. Admittedly, biking is faster. But if I were to do it again, I would definitely leave out the section between Sahagun and Astorga. Leon happens to be in between, so I suppose you could stop there for a day to visit. But that whole...
!!!
We stayed at that albergue on our Camino, a mere 3 weeks ago! It was one of the best we visited, such a warm welcome and friendly hospitaleros! We were allowed to sleep in the room that serves as an office, and had a wonderful breakfast. Truly a beautiful place.
!!!!!!!
OMG, we are leaving in two sleeps! I can't believe it. I've been kept busy by a visit from my godparents, we have been touring and I haven't been thinking about the Camino. Now I am. I'm getting a little bit scared. Last things to be done.... oh goodness. :?
bikebox
Read about it. We have these special bike bags which are better for us. We are renting a REALLY SMALL car to get from Barcelona to Roncesvalles and I doubt we could fit 2 bike boxes in it....
Thanks though!!
box
When sending yourself stuff to SdC, do you have to use the offical post office box or can you use your own box? I just got the bike bags that we're going to be using to pack our bikes for the plane. They are quite a lot larger than I expected, and came in a large box. I'm thinking I could...
Hola
Hola! Gracias!
spanish
Yes, I have been taking lessons for a year, and I can communicate on a relatively reasonable level. Nothing brilliant, but I'm hoping 3 weeks in spain will help me out.
I can't believe we are leaving in one week. We have been planning the trip for 6 months and now it is suddenly around the corner. We are quite prepared in terms of equipment, and it is likely to be fairly easy (biking)... what I am not happy about is the reports of the huge crowds on the CF...
talking
OK. Within the framework of training, no so much in terms of distances as in terms of getting on the bike every day, I went for a ride once again, third day in a row. It was a very short trip, only some 12 km, but it is about 30 degrees Celsius outside and dead calm, so it was torture...
