Ah!! Too late now! A perfect example of why one should not pre-book and just let the Camino lead you to places. The site is in Tosantos....and the nearby albergue is an incredible experience. There is also a public Albergue next door to the "monastery" albergue. Stayed there on my first Camio...
You might be right! I stood there for quite a while and could not see any footprints. That evening I showed the pictures to other hikers staying in the albergue and not a single person had even noticed the BIG sign and the rock!
Curious....When I walked the Frances in 2014, we were told that in order to stay in Roncevalle facility, one had to have walked from SJPDP, i.e. one could not stay there as a starting point. Not true, I guess.
in 2014, 16, &19, I stayed in some albergues where walkers had priority and bikers...
Not seeing things----The picture below is a rock with Pictographs located on the Primitivo. It is located about two meters off the path with a large historical sign describing it. When I showed the picture to others that day and posted the Picture on other Camino sites, no one recalled ever...
True...But if YOU have walked from SJPDP to Roncevalle you have heard the very strong lack of confidence voiced by MANY new Pilgrims They are SCARED!!! And what scares them? The profiles in the guide books! If they would draw their own profiles, it would give them more confidence on what lies...
20% is not very steep. 2 meter rise over 10 met
Also a Civilized Engineer. And I'm sure you know that lawyers and politicians determine what gets funded and THEY do NOT comprehend profiles that use exaggerated scales. Lawyers, Politicians, and civilians don't usually rebiew the actual...
Draw your own profile! Using a 200 meter vertical scale to a 1000 meter horizontal scale is ridiculous! If one of my staff gave such a profile, he/she would be looking for a new job. Compare 200 meters vertical to 200 meters horizontal if you want to see how steep the hill is that you will be...
At some Albergues the kitchen is to be used for a "community" meal and EVERYONE is expected to work with the others preparing the meal and cleaning afterwards. Great way to meet others.
Do your own profile of that "Incline". The guide books use EXTREME difference in vertical and Horizontal scales. Draw your own profile using something like 200 meters vertical to 200 meters horizontal and it will not look so steep. Actually I think the worst part is going downhill to Roncesvalles.
Lost 30 pounds both times I walked the FRANCES from SJPDP. Orrison is an easy walk and I really could not see myself sitting there most of a day instead of just walking further. Don't let the profiles in the guide books scare you. The grade is NOT as steep as you think. Remember horses pulled...
You definitely want to walk to Finsterer from Santiago--one of the best hikes of the entire trip. SJPDP to Santiago can be easily done in less than 30 days , giving you plenty of time to visit cities. Suggest you read James Mitchener book IBERIA for the chapters relating to the Camino Frances as...
Saw a few deer , several snakes; lots of birds. Did not see any wild Boar but there are many cafes with Trophy boar heads on the walls so they are there somewhere. Not unusual to see bird hunters with their bird dogs in the fields--not sure what type of bird they are hunting.
you now know this is the most crowded month to walk.
Really??? Looking at a couple sites on the internet do not indicate that. And even then FOUR times more people ONLY walk from Sarria than from SJPDP . I walked in September twice and other than the LARGE crowd after Sarria, I did not find...
Never pre booked on any of my 5 Caminos...but had to sleep on the floor a few times. But there are places where you sleep on the floor that are incredible places with incredible people. More to a place than fancy furniture and soft beds. And there is/wasa a municipal camping place in SJPDP.
Quite a few smaller places also close on a Sunday just because the owner decides to do something else--like go to the beach. Good idea to ALWAYS have something to eat in your pack.
And remember any guide book is only a guide. Feel free to deviate. Some of the most interesting albergues are not at the suggested daily stopping points. Generally wise to stop short or walk a little further than where the guide book stops for the day.
