Those tractors, left out in the field, those are for pilgrims, right? Also, why do the guardia civil yell so much when you're driving your newly found tractor? 😂 Very enjoyable thread. I love it when we speculate not knowing the answer, and we kind of get to the bottom of things. Harkens back...
This isn't the sign I remember, but thinking back on things, no way was there a rectangular sign similar to the roadside ones we see in the US. Faulty memory proven :)
Thanks a lot @Cuttooth - now I'm busy remembering this crazy fountain and that mornings proceedings.
Built by the nuns of St Xil in 1497, this fountain has served as beacon to travelers, bringing them away from the brothers at Samos.
Nah ;) - just being funny. We arrived at sunrise and the reflection on the fountain was wonderful. I thought there was a sign next to it, but alas my memory is...
I was in too big of a hurry on the camino, didn't spend enough time drawing. Didn't help I was in a serious pen and ink slump at the time. It is amazing what you remember when you sit and draw.
Consider this as a process-
1) Do you feel called anywhere? For me, I feel called to the Basque Country, to the Lot, to Portugal, to Finisterre and Muxia.
2) Time. Two weeks. I'd use Gronze stages as a starting point, and be cognizant of the difficulty over the KMs.
3) Check connections...
I used holistic GPS. Wherever I saw a whole lotta people, I went.
Other people I ran into had the Camino Ninja app, amongst others. I'd heard that you're more like to get lost looking at your phone, so I tried not to. Holistic GPS can land you in some hot water occasionally.
Story is almost over. After three cancellations, they walked me over to another airline. Involuntary transfer? Anyhow, a little Camino mileage would do me a bit of good. It would many people good.
I was on standby for 0600. Guess what is canceled? Tentatively I’m going through LA. I grabbed some sleep, spent time trying to sort things. It has been a horrible experience. Dateline marathon at the hotel.
If you have a light afternoon/early evening, maybe we could grab a coffee or something and reminisce. My flight has been canceled twice, and I’m at wits end. Some happy diversion would be awesome.
Thanks!
More and more I am convinced there is no "real" route other than one's route toward Santiago. It's about the journey, the purpose. It starts in your heart and ends up the road a piece.
Exactly. I didn't even have an expectation of finishing. If a farmer would have stopped me, I may have spent the time mucking out the barn. Didn't matter. It's been a few years.
First off, WOW! I can't believe the response to this. Frankly, I'm overwhelmed.
To answer a couple of questions, yes I wrote this. About my backpack: it was heavy - it had a battery and a coat I didn't use. I could have used some more t-shirts and underwear, and/or maybe a second pair of...
Nothing went right, nothing went wrong.
I overpacked, and didn't pack enough.
I packed shoes and did it in my sandals.
I dreamt of seeing many things and didn't. I saw other things I didn't dream of.
Things were busy, but wide open also.
Made some friends, made some other friendships...
What is the margin of error? Professionally I can tell you that there is some drift in road bed, and height change, but probably the biggest addition of mileage comes from my racing days-not hugging corners or picking the straightest line possible. 790km? 800km? A bit of a distance to walk, but...
I was running relatively competitively when my kids were little. My hint is make sure the stroller is steerable, especially with the distance you're going.
