Sadly, I’ve written off any hope for any Way of the Camino in 2021 -and this was after cancelling for 2020. This was supposed to be a memorial walk for my dear wife whom I lost at the beginning of last year.
Good luck Sarah, and just for right now plan and dream for when it will be safe to go.
Thanks, Heather. It was a loss, but minor compared to those who have lost loved ones, who live along the Camino and on which their livelihoods depend. My loss is that I planned to walk the Frances from SJPdP to SdC in memory of my dear wife who passed away on the 1st of this year. It was...
I am curious too. I walked the Portugues in 2017 and the only unsafe stretch I recall was walking north along the highway just south of Arcade. There was a long blind curve with a steep embankment sloping down to the road with nearly no shoulder on which to walk. I hated that part.
Tui is a lovely town. For me, the highlight was the Cathedral, well worth a visit. I have to admit, my Camino was a spiritual one, so visiting the Cathedral, attending Mass there, and wandering the nave and cloister was memorable. The square and cobbled streets in front had a wide variety of...
One could view the Camino Portugues as a unique gastromic experience. Having lived in Portugal and walked the CP, here are my recommendations. Do not pass up:
- sardinhas grelhado - grilled fresh sardines - in season June-July - wonderful!
- Vinho Verde - light, refreshing, slightly efferescent...
Welcome back, Martha. I’m sure you have a trunk full of memories to last a lifetime and it sounds as if the Camino will leave a lasting impression on your life. It did for me, walking the CP two summers ago. Couldn’t agree more on the love for Portugal!
I speak some Portuguese. It is nice and polite to do so and some people will be touched by your attempt. Practice a few phrases, but you don’t need to be fluent. English has become the Lingua Franca in the major towns and cities, less so in the countryside.
Hi Martin & Yvonne, I was on a very short schedule last year and did not want to leave anything open to chance, so I booked through an agency and stayed in hostales/hotels along the way. All accommodations were fine, save one or two. I took the Central Route and thoroughly enjoyed the...
Chris, check out the Renfas website for bus service from Porto to points north. Many pilgrims walking a shorter Portugues catch a bus from Porto airport to Tui on the Rio Minho. There are several intermediate stops along the route at which you might alight and debark.
Ouroboros, Even a whole year later, I was very moved by your post. I couldn’t think of a fitter tribute to your parents, nor can I think of any better way to deal with your grief. God love you.
If I can add to Blake’s response, I walked the Portugues last summer. There were a couple of spots along the freeway that I did not like. One in particular just south of Arcade - very busy road and the cars whizzing past - barely any room on the shoulder of the road. So be careful there. On the...
Blake, Congrats on your Camino Portugues! I walked it last summer and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life - deeply spiritual and emotional. Met wonderful people. Awesome scenery. Fabulous food. Sounds like yours was just as memorable. Buen Camino
