I don't know where you live, but we were never able to buy train or bus tickets ahead from the USA. Nor could we use the handy little ticket machines at the bus stations with our American credit cards. Tips for the long distance flyer
People have given some great tips here in this conversation. I don't have much to add, but agree that it is very helpful to take a rest day when you arrive in Europe, or even 2 or 3 rest days, if you can swing it.
