I didn't know Ryanair offered time travel! I wish their flights started in 2000 though, that would make Camino so much easier! Sorry, I couldn't resist.
The flights to Biarrtiz will be welcome news to many!
I usually book my flight 6-8 weeks out. I do check ticket prices frequently over the year to get an idea of what the cost usually is and to see if there is a discount somewhere along the way. Sign up for notifications from your airlines for seat sales.
*I know many people book their tickets...
LOL Let's add one more to the mix. Toronto to Biarritz(Bayonne) and then taxi or train to SJPdP. I recommend KLM/AirFrance as they have better service than Air Canada. Choose a multi-city flight to allow flying home from Santiago or Madrid if touristing afterwards. My flight was...
I met two people when I walked whose partners were 1) touring Africa and 2) driving about Spain and meeting up with their peregrina every few days.
There are tons of places to see and things to do in Spain and some of them should fit their interests. Museums, art galleries, historic sites...
It might be possible, you would have to ask at the branch. An alternative would be to send your luggage to Casa Ivar in Santiago and pick it up at the end of your Camino.
Buen Camino!
I did a fair amount of travel after my Camino two years ago. Santiago-Bilbao-Toledo-Madrid-Seville-Cordoba-Granada-Barcelona. I booked trains from Madrid to Seville, Cordoba and Granada. I'd recommend booking all your train tickets at once, you can do that at any train station (I was having...
As @goldie from aus said, flying to Biarritz is easiest. Give yourself 2 hours to clear customs, collect luggage and check into the flight to Biarritz minium. Be prepared for your flight gate to change at CDG without warning, The macarons and croissants at the airport are delicious :D Buen...
Do you have to check in for your flight to Bilbao or is it all one ticket? Either way, there should be lots of time to deplane, collect luggage, check in and drop off your luggage and have a snack before boarding.
Buen Camino!
The National Museum of Anthropology is across the street from Atocha station. There is a tapestry museum a couple of blocks away (I think it's only open Monday to Friday). Reine Sophia is a block away from the station as well as the Royal Botanical gardens.
I think flying into Santiago and taking a bus from there would be quickest. Flights within Spain are relatively cheap when booked a couple of weeks in advance.
I book a bulkhead/extra leg room seat. I never manage to fall asleep on planes but do force myself to try and I keep my eye closed for as many hours as I can. I made the mistake last time of starting my walk the day after I arrived, this was very stupid for me as I was much more jetlagged than...
I had several flights this year flying in and out of various Canadian cities. My luggage was never lost but there were several delays.
Landing in Montreal we sat for an hour while we waited for a plane to depart our arrival gate. Luggage took an extra hour.
Landing in Edmonton I waited...
Morocco seems like an excellent location to spend the winter! https://news.stv.tv/scotland/scottish-osprey-feared-dead-arrives-in-morocco-after-flying-for-36-hours
I stayed in one of Ilunion hotels last year in Bilbao, I wish I had known about the company earlier as I would have booked some of my other stays in their hotels. 40% of their staff (minimum) have disabilities and all of their hotels are equal access. I appreciated their commitment to their...
I stayed in a lovely terrace suite at Hotel 1898 just off the Ramblas. It was convenient to everything we wanted to see. I was disappointed with the restaurant for breakfast but made up for the cold eggs by drinking all of their complimentary cava :D
Edit: sorry not a small hotel!
