We started the Camino del Norte on August 5th. We were spoiled to mostly have the trails to ourselves for 30 days. There were batches of pilgrims at certain points. Many Spaniards walked for a week or 10 days from Bilbao, Santander or Gijon. In general though there were not that many walking...
Accommodations are tight right now but by mid-September most Spaniards will be back to work so should be a lot better. Many albergues open (but less capacity) but some, especially in out-of-the-way towns, are closed.

We’ve finished day 2 on the Norte. Saw very few pilgrims in Irun. Walked with one pilgrim to San Sebastian and saw only two others. Sat for an hour having leisurely lunch at Pasaia. Didn’t see a single pilgrim walk by to the ferry.
