Who goes Camino del Norte now?

Good luck! I'm jealous :) I'm sure we'd all love to see your progress via Instagram. If you feel like sharing, you could post your profile name.

San Sebastian to have no dedicated pilgrim accommodation next year?

Starting in Irun is already a whole lot more hassle than just arriving in San Sebastian by bus and expecting a bed waiting for you. It should weed out those casual fake pilgrims who have just read online that all you have to do is arrive and ask for a "credencial". Every way of policing this is...

San Sebastian to have no dedicated pilgrim accommodation next year?

I think the comments are on-topic. The article talks about tourists taking places from pilgrims. Many of these tourists are cyclists, particularly on the Camino Frances. I've seen this with my own eyes. To be clear, I'm not talking about any cyclists likely to be registered on this forum, as...

San Sebastian to have no dedicated pilgrim accommodation next year?

The stamps are dated though, so this would give it away if someone had done this the same day. The idea is that if they're going to cheat, the least they have to do is invest the previous day at an albergue, either Irun or Pasajes. I appreciate that the volunteer hospitaleros might not want to...

San Sebastian to have no dedicated pilgrim accommodation next year?

Can't help thinking this problem of fake pilgrims could be fixed with a little more discrimination. They must be able to recognise these tourigrinos or there couldn't be an article complaining about them. What if they only allowed pilgrims who'd already got one stamp in their credencial? So...

Camino del Norte as my first Camino in June - have I made a mistake?

You haven't made a mistake, you've just made a choice. That necessarily means some things you have sacrificed and some other things you will have instead. IMHO Norte has... better food but less social life, more beautiful scenery but more hills and mountains, more variety and adventure but less...

    albergues?

Oh and stop here on your first day instead of San Sebastian: https://www.gronze.com/pais-vasco/guipuzcoa/pasajes-san-juan/albergue-peregrinos-santa-ana This albergue has the best view of the camino, and there are great restaurants below on the road that runs along the side of the bay out to the...

    albergues?

Albergue Andiketxe was lovely, that's recommended: https://www.gronze.com/pais-vasco/vizcaya/olabe/albergue-andiketxe In Bilbao I found the Metropolitan Hostel to be good, central and reasonable price.

Anyone have experience starting the Camino in Biarritz? Advice?

Are you flying to Biarritz? Why not start at the airport! I did. I walked from my airport to my hotel in 15 minutes, and then to the train station the next morning early. From there you can take a light rail train a few km to get you to the trail. You should arrive in Irun early evening.

Anyone have experience starting the Camino in Biarritz? Advice?

I did this route exactly a year ago, on Don's same advice! It was a tidy walk but quite doable and I made it to Irun that night. I actually took a train just out to the edge of the city to get a head start of about 5km . It's a nice day's walk, but something I will say is that at this time of...

Routes Lacking Sufficient Municipal Albergue Beds...

If you're feeling brave, the Norte is actually perfect for wild-camping. Imagine waking up on a beach and looking out of your tent to see the ocean :) It's not bad as an emergency option.

Routes Lacking Sufficient Municipal Albergue Beds...

Main season on the Norte is a month or two later than on the Frances, because of the temperature difference being close to the Atlantic brings. You may actually be better on the Norte right now :)

Routes Lacking Sufficient Municipal Albergue Beds...

You are walking in high season for the CF, but all the same, from all these reports like yours, it does sound like this year is unusually busy. It certainly wasn't always thus. Have you tried stopping at places inbetween guidebook stages and then walking out-of-phase with all the...

Routes Lacking Sufficient Municipal Albergue Beds...

The answer to this isn't any more complicated than you expect. There are limited beds. They fill up one by one from around 3pm, usually in some queued order. Factors like holidays, weekends, availability of other accommodation, weather, stage length and random fluctuation mean that certain...

LIVE from the Camino @Iriebabel walks from Irún on the Norte

Stay the night in Pasajes. It's gorgeous. There's amazing grilled fish at the end of the bay. The albergue is cozy and charming with a breathtaking view. The next day you can take the long route up the rocky stairs and over the mountain and arrive in time for lunch in San Sebastian. Heaven!

Any suggestions for an interesting start point on Camino Norte

Yes the stretch Bilbao to Santander is full of alternative coastal stretches. There isn't much walking on the sand involved.

Any suggestions for an interesting start point on Camino Norte

Pasajes San Juan is so gorgeous I'd be tempted if starting at San Sebastian to just start that one stage earlier so you can see that :) Staying at the hostel there too was idyllic.

Any suggestions for an interesting start point on Camino Norte

Start at Irun or Bilbao. Both wonderful.

    Should I bring a computer?

There's no way you need a PC just for booking and navigating, but for times when you can't avoid doing a small amount of work on the camino, I have a neat solution... You can leave your home PC turned on and connect to it from the Camino using VNC on a small tablet (or large phone). I have Jump...

    Del Norte advice

I'd like to sound a note of "this wasn't true for me", to balance out the views. The Norte was gorgeous. The road-walking was a pain in the @*** but occasional and managable. Accommodation was occasionally tricky to find but I was never left without a bed. There was less camino community spirit...
