Announcement: Creation of the Acogida Tradicional Jacobea

I fully support the inititive of the group. I am certain that the announcement will be decried and attacked here as it does not fit the current opinion of many members. Much has been lost due to the commercial control of activity of all types on the camino. Any expression of loss by those who...

    Second "Half" of the Norte

I have done both…the entire norte and then the Primitivo. I think I would walk the Norte over the Primitivo if just given one choice. The much lower numbers are a big attraction to me.

    Pavement!!!

Not everyone is as adverse and hostile to pavement. I tend to just take the way as it comes to me. Of course. much of my available training walks at home are on pavement.

Connecting to Camino del Norte from Saint-Jean-Pied-du-Port

Congratulations on walking one of the more difficult routes. We hear very little about it. I think members would appreciate hearing about your adventure if you would care to share.

Best transport from BCN to Irun

Actually....if the connection is better to somewhere a bit further along (Bilbao, etc) it could be used as the FEVE train runs all day along that route. You might want to take a look at the FEVE schedule and see what might be possible. As Laurie advised...the little local metro style FEVE is...

Best transport from BCN to Irun

The local train (FEVE) from San Sebastian to Irun is about 25 minutes and costs under 3 euro. However I had missed that we were talking about BCN instead of Madrid. It is a about a 8 hour trip on the bus from Barcelona....but if you have the time planned in...it will be an interesting ride...

Best transport from BCN to Irun

Train/Bus to San Sabastian....then small local narrow gauge train to Irun. I found this to be very simple and straight forward. Note that San Sabastian is often listed as "Donostia / San Sebastián" on bus/train schedules. Donostia is the Basque name for the city.

Irún to Bilbao in March or October or wait for another window?

I have walked in virtually every month of the year and in every season and weather conditions....Rain, snow, wind, mud, sun, heat....it is all good unless you set your mind against it. It is a long way across Spain (or France) and you can expect to see a lot of weather changes. For me it is...

    Chinches in Llanes Albergue

😵‍💫 Geeez.....maybe I just won't sleep anywhere next time. Just walk for 30 days with the odd stop for a coffee. (actually, I have had very little contact with buggers and no bites in over a decade of Camino adventures)

    1 week on the Norte

The Norte has adequate or better accomondations for the entire route...starting in Irun. Irun is the traditional start of the Norte and has a well organized albergue. San Sabastian is 27km and is normally the first stage stop. It is possible to stop earlier...but your time restraint probably...

    1 week on the Norte

John...why not just start in Irun and walk as far as your time allows. That way you could return another time and start from where you left off and complete the Norte in total. San Sabastian alone is worth starting at the start of the Norte.

LIVE from the Camino A walk on the Camino Del Norte

Enjoy Chrissy.. We stayed on the Norte the first time we walked it. I returned later (with grandsons) to finish on the Primitivo....both routes were great. The Norte after Oviedo was much quieter and fewer pilgrims.

Is the Camino del Norte feasible in February? Are shelters open?

I think that some of the closures and sparse accommondations are tied to the Covid stuff. Most of the restrictions are gone and the numbers of pilgrims are increasing to the point where it makes sense for albergues and pensions to reopen and stay open.

Is the Camino del Norte feasible in February? Are shelters open?

I know from personal experience that the Camino Frances is very doable in the Winter. I have walked it several times in January/February. There are ample albergues open on the Frances. However....I have only walked the Norte in the Spring and in the Summer months so do not know what the...

    How much water to carry?

Keep in mind that water weighs 2.2 pounds per liter. (also per litre ;) ) 1 kilo= 2.2 lbs 1 liter = 2.2 lbs (1 kilo) 1.5 liter = 3.3 lbs 2 liter = 4.4 lbs Carrying more water than needed can greatly increase your pack weight.

    Mosquito magnet 🥴

Mosquitoes have never been a problem (for me) on any of the routes...as far as I can recall. The primitivo and VdlP both had some serious little fly problems in places. Of course, that could have just been a time of the year.

    Albergue de Peregrinos Santa Ana

August is a very busy tourist season in the San Sebastian area. It is a beautiful town, beach and overall great place to visit. Many Europeans make it a destination in August. Finding accommodations of any type has always been a problem. Don't under estimate the possible challenge.

    Accommodation issues (a warning)

Keep in mind that the outside booking agents such as Booking.com, Hotels.com, Expedia, etc. show only the rooms they have been allotted and will often show fully booked when in fact the property has many vacancies available. It is strongly recommended to contact the property directly if you see...

    Accommodation in San Sebastian?

Keep in mind that San Sebastian is a beautiful resort city and is very popular with people from all over Europe. The Camino and pilgrims pass through but is really not a big part of activity or demand. It would be best to not expect to find anything in the inexpensive range. Fantastic...

Walking from west to east on the Del Norte

Good luck on the long trek to the NL. I have done short sections of various routes in reverse and have always had difficulty in maintaining the proper way. I suspect that using GPS trek (from the Dutch Association) would work in reverse as far as determining that you were on the route.
