Where would you plan to spend an extra day?

We spent a week in Gijon at the end of our 2019 camino. We had an apartment near the downtown. A few blocks from the city beach walk (wonderful!) and many excellent bars and restaurants and lots of places to walk along the ocean. We loved Gijon. It's not touristy at all but I think that it...

    Accommodation on the Norte

Things may have changed but when we did the Norte in April of 2018 and also April 2019 we had no problem getting accommodations, at least in hotels and such. (We didn't stay in any albergues.) We called the day before, but when we arrived, we were often the only people staying at the place.

    Norte advice

We walked the Norte in April 2018 and 2019 and found prices very reasonable (a little more than the Frances but not a lot) and places to stay plentiful. EXCEPT Semana Santa (Easter week) when prices doubled and we had to reserve early to have a place to stay. We are going back in 2024 and...

    Industrial Walking along the Norte...

Instead of taking public transport all the way from Bilbao to Portugalete, you might consider taking the metro half way or so and then walking into Portugalete so you don't miss coming to the hanging bridge. That was a highlight for me.

    Coffee in the Morning?

I've mentioned this before and it wasn't entirely well-received, but I've found that one 100 mg caffeine pill gets me through till a good cafe con leche is available. Also my husband and I like starting out walking on an empty stomach and this allows that. I don't enjoy black coffee so the...

    Camino norte August 2023

We've walked the Camino del Norte twice in April and accommodations where inexpensive and easy to get. We were often the only ones in our hotel or other accommodation. EXCEPT, when we were there Easter week everything doubled in price and accommodations were difficult to get. Made us realize...

Walking from Santander on the coast

Agree. The walk into Santander along the coast is spectacular. It amazes me that it is not the main way to go but is somewhat of an alternate route.

Walking from Santander on the coast

Not sure about exactly this spot but we've had good luck many places going to Google maps and looking for hotels (zoom in and out and they will appear/disappear) and also on airbnb. You might already have tried those options but since you only mentioned booking, I wanted to mention those...

    Gijon in contrast

It's nice to hear people say good things about Gijon. My husband and I rented an airbnb and spent over a week in Gijon at the end of our spring 2019 camino. We really liked staying there. We weren't looking for anything touristy. We just wanted to pretend we were living in Spain for a while...

    Bilbao to Portugalete

We took the metro about half way to Portugalete and then walked the rest. It wasn't a terrible walk. And taking the transporter bridge (Vizcaya) across the river into Portugalete was thrilling. I'm so glad we didn't miss that.

First time on Camino del Norte

Between Bilbao and Santander ... when there are alternate routes, be sure to take the one by the ocean. Especially the day you leave Castro Urdiales. And the final walk before you catch the ferry into Santander. Beautiful, memorable paths.

No accommodations between Ribadeo and Mondoñedo. Alternative route to Foz?

My husband and I walked the Ruta de Cantabrico starting in Ribadeo -- in spring 2019. It's a wonderful walk. We were inspired by Magwood, mentioned above, to do it. Here is our blog: https://crowley.pw/cdn2019/ The Ruta entries are buried in there starting here...

    Expensive Accommodations!

My husband and I walked the Norte in spring 2018. We stayed mostly in hotels and such. We didn't have a problem with accommodations. Prices were good and often we'd be the only ones staying in a place. With this exception: Holy Week. Prices went way up that week and it was harder to find...

    Questions from first timer

On the Camino del Norte I only remember one place where we had to pass through a field with cows and no fence between us. Shown here in this photo. We were nervous, but they mostly ignored us. (There was a bull a little further away in the field as well, didn't get that in the photo.) I...

    Camino Norte + heights

El Brusco was amazing and you certainly had to pick your way up and down carefully. I was sure glad I had hiking poles. (I got down on my seat to do part of the downhill.) But it wasn't exactly scary. It's one of my nicest memories of the Norte. My forum photo (to the left) was taken on El...

    Camino Norte + heights

That's so interesting. I was dreading this bridge because had heard it was scary but my husband and I didn't find it scary at all. Except my husband said he was afraid of dropping his phone because he was busy taking pictures.

Beautiful coastal route Ribadeo cathedral beach

My husband and I just returned from walking the Ruta del Cantabrico from Ribadeo to Ladrido (all 7 stages of the Ruta). It was amazing. I agree that Cathedrals Beach was really special. It was a rainy day, but magical. You need to be there during low tide. We were there during Holy Week and...

Camino del Norte as my first Camino in June - have I made a mistake?

The Norte is beautiful. Sometimes you have alternate routes along the Norte and it's hard to decide which to take. I'd advise to always take the seaside route if that is a choice. Especially the day you walk (and then ferry) into Santander. Spectacular. Also I remember taking a beautiful...
