How to pack Tilley hat (ltm6) into backpack?

How do you stop the corks and string from getting tangled up in the wash?

Lightweight Blankets for Walking the Camino

I have the green version and used it outdoors for a couple of nights on Gran Canaria in November. Not quite warm enough but close! Have you tried the bag in damp weather after the washing machine treatment? Any idea what effect it had on permeability?

Those who have walked at least one Camino - What are your favorite insoles and why?

Here in the UK I usually buy gel insoles from Sports Direct. Used to be branded as Dunlop but I think they are now Slazenger but they are effectively the same. Cheap, durable, comfortable and widely available.

    Chinese shops???

Might help when you drop your pack off that bridge like Martin Sheen did...

    Chinese shops???

Huge shops in most Spanish towns which sell a wide range of cheap hardware, cosmetics, clothes, electrical goods and other stuff. Mostly imported from China and the shops themselves are largely run by Chinese people and often have Chinese names.

    OK guys, what underwear?

I wear the same clothes at home as on Camino. I am quite selective about underpants when I am walking though because I usually average about 30km per day with the odd 40+km day occasionally. That is a lot more repetitive movement than I would normally make in a day at home and so a much greater...

Silly Stuff that you have Worn on Camino - Pics

Not exactly a Camino but certainly a long distance walk. My wife and I spent New Year of 1989/90 in Nepal. While in Kathmandu I bought a hideously garish suit of multicoloured cotton - all the rage at the time. I've only ever worn it once. In about 1994 or 1995 I made a 24 hour sponsored walk...

    OK guys, what underwear?

I have never considered ending a long-distance walk early because of blisters on my feet but at least one Camino almost finished prematurely because of chafing in the groin. Extremely painful. And a shade more embarrassing to discuss with a female Spanish pharmacist using my minimal language...

    OK guys, what underwear?

If the word is 'varicocele" then I hope you never need to use it! Not a very pleasant experience.

    OK guys, what underwear?

I like the support of fairly tight underwear. Otherwise there is a lot of wobbling up and down and side to side with the risk of chafing and just occasionally a small varicocele which can take weeks to settle down. Not much fun.

    OK guys, what underwear?

Nothing very special for me. Not cotton - gets too damp from sweat and then chafes. Not small briefs or thongs - something like trunks which run a few inches down the thigh and therefore avoid a hem chafing in the groin. And I go for a tight fit rather than loose boxers to prevent the contents...

Vodafone - Setting for crossing from Portugal to Spain

A few years back I was using a Portuguese SIM which stopped working after Tui until I remembered to change my phone settings. Sometimes we forget that there are national borders because we no longer have to pass through physical checkpoints... :)

    Walking Poles

Way back in another century I worked in a hotel in St Andrews with lots of American guests on golf holidays. They would pick up a hire car at the airport and then meet a roundabout a couple of hundred yards from the airport gate. You could usually tell the ones who chose the wrong way round by...

    Walking Poles

A little parable that might help! :-)

    Walking Poles

Agreed! At first I was actively concentrating on coordinating movement of poles and feet. With enough practice it becomes almost automatic - the poles move as your arms move. Helps if you have experience in marching of course! Also remember that the poles should not be vertical - they...

    A stupid washing thing..

A few more years and a rub with a damp cloth then some wax will do the job just fine for me... :-(

How light was your backpack for Camino Frances (800 km)

I am not arguing that any particular weight or packing list is "enough" or "not enough". That will depend so much on circumstances. Time of year, route, choice of accommodation, and so on. Too many variables. But I have in mind for example questions like "Should I take a sleeping bag in April?"...

How light was your backpack for Camino Frances (800 km)

I agree. Sometimes it feels as if stripping back on pack weight has become a game in its own right and in the more extreme cases a fetish. Going far beyond practical limits. I think that very few people who are physically capable of walking a Camino are genuinely incapable of carrying the...
