I was hoping but saw none. On the Hospitales I saw horses, cows (they have horns but ignore you…if you see calves leave them alone). I saw a bull, we ignored each other. There’s a sign near the start warning of bears. We all talk about bears. No one ever sees one. I think if there were marauding...
It’s understandable to be nervous, so if it’s reassuring many women (including myself) have walked that stage alone and enjoyed it with no problems. To echo what @peregrina2000 said, you may very well be part of a group by then, and if not could ask to join others you meet—I am the most...
It was the best marked stage I’ve found not just on the Primitivo but everywhere I walked. Whoever marked that did a phenomenal job. For people reading who haven’t walked yet the markers are sawed poles marked with arrows. You can see in photo there’s one in foreground, one at pony, one in...
My guess is bc it has no cafes, bars, water fountains or options for stopping. I assume guides say don’t walk solo bc (when I walked a LONG time ago) I didn’t get cell coverage the entire way but I walked alone without issue.
Definitely read the thread @peregrina2000 posted, especially tia valeria and TerryB posts. IMO Hospitales was the best day of the best Camino but I admit I’ve never done the other road. @Tia Valeria and her husband describe how they walked the alternate road to Pola de Allende then crossed over...
I think the stage to grado was the least appealing (provided you want a compostela, otherwise I’d skip Arzua to SdC). It will also likely be the easiest to skip with public transportation. That said, two or three days I walked 1 1/2 stages, walked a double from Fonsagrada to Lugo, and...
Yeah, I never said I was gentle. No one accidentally pulls fruit from tree or vine to shove into their mouth, or mistakenly climbs over a fence with a “no trespassing” sign. A few days sidelined would give them needed time to reflect, and give the farmers a break as the walkers bus ahead a few...
I’m not a farmer, just a recent transplant to a rural farm/ranch area, but I believe many farmers plant fall/winter crops as well as spring/summer so it’s possible to trample crops through much of the year. Not sure about Spain but I’d just stay out of the fields
So are guard dogs. People have absolutely no excuse, none, for defacing something that doesn’t belong to them, and are irresponsible beyond words to damage other people’s property, especially their livelihood. I hope karma finds everyone who tramples a farmer’s crops, leaves open their livestock...
Plan your trip for a not busy time of year. I echo the recommendations of pairing/tripling up for a hotel room if necessary, or taking a bus or taxi (or walking) to next albergue if the one you want is full & you don’t want to share a hotel. Even if you have to get a hotel a few times it will be...
This is the one Camino I never fretted about losing my way, probably because big cities were the difficult part for me. The most can’t possibly get lost day for me, out of 90 days on 9 caminos was actually the Hospitales day. Buen Camino!
I agree with @dick bird (and to some extent with the rest). I saw a lot of good info on the forum before I walked but pretty much everyone used the same guidebook and/or read the same posts. By googling I learned a lot more about the area. I read a book designed just for tourists in the area of...
It’s been many years now but I recall what others have already mentioned: rough terrain, extended distances between towns, less accommodation choices etc. As was mentioned this probably was to keep us off the road although I do recall some road walking. And it seemed the cars were perfectly...
That’s exactly what my friend said, he likes the mental challenge of planning his pace, and the zen of the run, and feels he can see things just as well as if he walked.
Maybe we should put bells on the runners as well as the bikes
This made me laugh recalling a conversation I had with a fellow officer the day before I left to participate in the Nijmegen March. I hadn’t had time to train bc of work, but figured it was only four days long, and the distance was in km which I always ignored. “I’ll be fine, I told him, we’re...
The wife deserves a medal for driving a camper across Spain. The lack of support crew is what holds back my coach, his wife has made clear if she goes to Spain it won’t be as crew.
I wouldn’t want to be there—but then there’s a reason I walked unpopular paths in colder weather. That said, I imagine it will help economically stressed people we depend upon so…
perhaps when they’re not racing they walk and this qualify for completion of the required distance. My marathon...
