If you do decide to take public transport from Geneva to Le Puy, I think you'll find that trains are quicker and more frequent than buses (though also somewhat more expensive). Geneva to Lyon then Lyon to Le Puy.
If you need an overnight to adjust your bodyclock after the flight, Geneva is...
Hi, I walked in 2018. I arrived in Le Puy on Easter Sunday and commenced walking on Easter Tuesday, which I think was April 3rd.
The weather was generally bright; I experienced only two days of significant rain during a month of walking. I did find some patches of lying snow and experienced one...
The day out of Le Puy is mostly a long continuous climb, then a drop towards the Allier. It is never as steep as the section from SJPdP to Orison, and neither is the downhill as steep or as long as that to Roncesvalles.
If you coped with SJPdP to Roncesvalles and are roughly as fit this time...
When I stayed there in Spring 2018, the proprietor did indeed bring dinner, having checked how many pilgrims there were staying the night. We had become quite anxious because he was very late (about 8.30), but we needn't have worried. Dinner was superb and plentiful; breakfast in his actual high...
I used your guidebook (rather than the app) on the Via de la Plata last year and found it excellent - both in route-finding and accommodation terms AND those titbits of history and insight, thank you!
We plan a 2024 late summer/autumn Camino from Cluny via Le Puy to SdC, so if you were to...
Hi @Lexicos,
I loved the Voie du Puy. I got used to telephoning my proposed accommodation at midday, so they knew I was coming that afternoon. It's not just for the bed - it's to make sure that there's a seat (and plate!) at the dinner table for you.
I'm sure you're going to enjoy the wonderful...
About 20km after Conques, on the Le Puy route there is a (poorly) marked path veering south which I was told (when I accidentally walked 3km along it) eventually links to the Via Tolosana.
All I really know is that it resulted in a long, sun exposed detour along a paved road, to refind the...
Hi Maruska,
The weather varies year to year of course but for me it was mostly fine. In the month I had two days of rain, though some days were quite windy. However, walkers in May and June 2018 got quite wet and muddy. The Aubrac had some patches of lying snow and some 'bullets' of wind-driven...
Allyson,
I find that watching some old French movies with English subtitles on Youtube for a few weeks before I go to France helps to 'get my ear in'. It seems to wake up those 40 year old memories of school French lessons!
In normal times, and during the walking season (April-October) there is a volunteer-run pilgrim office 'Le Camino' open for a few hours each day, not far from the side entrance to the cathedral. (Zoom in on Google Maps, just South of the cathedral to locate.) It takes the form of a cafe with...
Conques is a beautiful village and the abbey worth a long explore. Cahors is a small historic city with much to see, including Roman remains, a grand cathedral and the mediaeval pilgrim bridge.
But the best places are the little ones, and I'm not sure I would recommend 36 hours in them.
Perhaps...
Another vote for the Le Puy route. I walked it in April 2018.
Yes, it is different from the CF:
Fewer walkers most of whom first language is French (though many can speak English too),
less infrastructure,
somewhat tougher terrain (though the route is well marked and I managed well in...
Another vote for the Miam Miam Dodo guide, mainly for the whimsical cultural and historical insights and the up to date accommodation lists. But like Alwyn, I found the maps better on the skinny Michelin guide.
Hi Julesy!
I walked Le Puy to St Jean in April 2018. I have nothing to add to what has already been shared, except that once you're underway and feeling confident, you might want to leave booking the night's accommodation until lunchtime. That way you know how your legs feel and how far you...
Hi there,
Le Puy to Conques is a beautiful walk to do, with thrilling views, and very diverse landscapes. It is undulating, with the first two or three days being the hilliest. However I completed it in 8 days in April 2018, walking 25 to 30 km each day. The camping sites are not always...
The Via Podiensis, or Voie du Puy is beautiful, with very diverse scenery and heritage and quite a different vibe from the CF. I loved it. I hope you will too.
I walked from Le Puy in April '18, intending to finish in SJPdP. I arrived in St Jean three days earlier than my booked train home from...
May is quite popular for French walkers who can run bank holidays together for a week or two's holiday. So there might be a bit more stress on the accommodation capacity. But when I walked Le Puy to St JPdP in April 18, I tended to phone ahead at noon, and usually that worked out fine. My...
This is a great time to walk from Le Puy, as long as you are prepared for an assortment of weather. I set off on 2nd April 2018, and walked for 29 days, wearing shorts on 27 days, but paired with an insulated rain jacket for at least part of nine or ten days. The Aubrac in week one is...
Another thing to mention is that the majority of the walkers on the Le Puy route are French and often only speak French. Some of the hosts have reasonable English though. A bit of school French will see you a long way.
The most up to date and comprehensive guide to both route and accommodation...
I agree with those saying Le Puy to Figeac or Cahors, with a diversion along the Cele valley if you have enough time. It's quite tough walking compared with most parts of the CF, so you might do slightly fewer km per day. Depending on your time of year you might need to commit 24 to 48 hours...
