Hi! Ive walked the full Vasco in the standard direction and a few stages in reverse - from Santo Domingo to Haro and Zegama to Beasian. It can be very tricky to see the arrows going in reverse! I would definitely suggest having some form of map to follow. I used Mapy.cz on this route. It's not...
Hello again! I wrote the original post in March after hearing from a friend who opted to walk the mountain alternatives of the Vasco over a long weekend. I've now had the chance to explore the area she had trouble with and can provide a little more context/info for those heading out on the...
At this point, the plan is to close 30 September. However, there seems to be some desire by the town to be open in October as well but that is not yet confirmed. The Gronze website has been updating their info for the Albergue so it's a good place to check closer to the time.
I did the Vasco in...
I think this link will take you to the other thread regarding an alternative close to Zegama: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/access-issues-on-mountain-alternatives-near-segura-before-zegama.73501/
The Camino Vasco is a quiet route and the alternative even quieter! I was out...
Hello! I started my short stint as an hospitalera in the new Albergue in Zegama yesterday and am here for a week. It is a lovely building in an even lovelier location!
There are pictures on another thread here that are professional and give you a good idea of what it looks like. I've attached a...
Thanks so much for posting on the Vasco! I really enjoyed following along and it brought back lots of memories of that great walk.
I'm sorry to hear of the injury though. Wishing him a rapid recovery and a buen Camino for the rest of the way.
Take care!
Thanks so much for posting! I'm really enjoying following along again! I have such wonderful memories of that trail and particularly the tunnel day.
I was at the tunnel on a long weekend so it was busy up there. And if you can believe it, there were a number of trail runners...RUNNING! I...
I agree with @VNwalking , it's not as bad as it seems! And the scenery is so beautiful in that valley that I was barely paying attention to the elevation gain! The numerous photo breaks helped too :)
Buen Camino!
Not sure if this will be of use to you, but I read a Gronze Facebook post this morning about the new Albergue in Zegama. It was scheduled to open 1st June but now on Gronze it says 'Open 2022: 14 May to 30 September
'https://www.gronze.com/pais-vasco/guipuzcoa/zegama/albergue-peregrinos-zegama
Buen Camino!! Seems like some good weather for the walk as well this week! Looking forward to hearing you're experiences on the trail. I still miss it :)
Hi! Yes, I've just walking from Irún to Haro and posted info here during the trip. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer :)
It's a really lovely route with lots of variation from one day to the next!
Buen Camino!
Day 8: Briñas to Haro (3.6km)
A final post as this trip comes to a close. The walk from Briñas to Haro is a very pleasant stroll along the river, over a medieval bridge and past those wonderful Bodegas. I stopped it at my favorite to have them stamp my credential. The woman was a bit confused...
Day 7: La Puebla de Arganzon to Briñas (28km)
Ah, rain. And rain. And more rain. It was a cold, wet and windy walk today. I was very glad I packed gloves!
I had breakfast at the panadería recommended by SabineP and when I left the sky just got darker. It was a steady rain for a while. Leaving...
Unfortunately, pension Pili is also listed as "temporarily closed". No answer when I called a few weeks ago and the link to their website on Gronze now leads to one of those "this site doesn't exist" pages. Always worth trying again though! I didn't see it when I had a walk around but I might...
Thank you! The bars been closed since I arrived (holiday Monday) but maybe it'll open later?!
I walked past the bakery earlier and will have breakfast there tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!
Day 6:. Vitoria to La Puebla de Arganzon (21km)
Was nice to chat with a fellow peregrin@ last night! I shared the Albergue room with a man from France. He just started the day before from Salvatierra and is headed to Burgos so explains why we hadn't crossed paths yet. I'm heading for Haro so...
Day 5: Salvatierra to Vitoria (28km)
The previous days I've been using words like "stunning" "amazing" and "wow" to describe the walk. Today, I'd use "nice" and "pleasent". It was a relatively flat and straightforward path to Vitoria but I do feel like there are less markers/arrows now that I'm...
Day 4: Zegama to Salvatierra (23km)
What a route! Every day has been so different thus far. Yesterday, urban paths and country roads. Today good, proper hiking trails. It was nice to be off pavement all morning (though back on it later in the day).
The trail starts going up shortly after...
