The Criterion Collection, a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films on DVD now offers the 1969 Classic The Milky Way (La voie lactee) on DVD.
The blurb reads:
The first of what Luis Buñuel later proclaimed a trilogy (along with The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Phantom of Liberty) about "the search for truth," The Milky Way (La voie lactee) daringly deconstructs contemporary and traditional views on Catholicism with ribald, rambunctious surreality. Two French beggars, present-day pilgrims en route to Spain's holy city of Santiago de Compostela, serve as Buñuel's narrators for an anticlerical history of heresy, told with absurdity and filled with images that rank among Buñuel's most memorable (stigmatic children, crucified nuns) and hilarious (Jesus considering a good shave). A diabolically entertaining look at the mysteries of fanaticism, The Milky Way remains a hotly debated work from cinema's greatest skeptic.
"Imagine a Saturday Night Live devoted entirely to the subject of Catholicism and the heretics it attracts, and you have some idea of the mischief the great Spanish director Luis Buñuel is up to in his slyly hilarious The Milky Way.... newly released in a restored high-definition digital transfer."
San Francisco Chronicle

Those outside N America should note that Criterion only produce DVDs in region 1 format. If your DVD player/TV can't handle that, you're better off with one of the Buñuel box sets in your local format. At least here in the UK, you can rent them for a few pounds a month.

There's a good essay on the film on Criterion's website, though.

It would be interesting to see this on DVD - gives you the opportunity to rewind, and try and work out what on earth he's on about :)
