Against all odds, "the high tide will come in 2009," warns the president of Agacs. Pilgrims from around the world plan to advance their trip to Santiago to avoid overcrowding in the 2010 Holy Year.
Pilgrims are aware that the camino will be saturated with the celebration of a jubilee year. And it seems that for 2010 there are already Xacobeo tail. Against all odds, "the high tide will come in 2009, chaired by José Antonio Riera, president of the Galician Association of Friends of the Camino de Santiago (Agacs).
The old route has been able to dodge the crisis in 2008 and the trend will continue . "People prefer to escape the crowds and we expect that next summer the flow will increase," says the manager. It is based on the enormous number of e-mails daily that are stacked in the Agacs inbox.
"The level of consultation is very high," he said. The group maintains contact with xacobeas associations from different corners of the planet .
The pilgrim's office of the Rúa do Vilar not yet completed the count, but estimated a higher figure of 125,000 accreditations. And, despite the icy temperatures, 1085 certificates were handed over in December which equates to an average of 35 per day.

Oh no! In fact I was one who moved my Camino forward because of 2010 and the projected crowds! Now I am part of the statistics! Can the system really handle all these pilgrims? Makes me think I might be better off looking at a different route to Santiago.......................

Hello,
I was planning my pilgrimage on Camino Frances June/July 2010. Then i read the news about the crowds, somebody in Santiago estimated that there will about 250 000 pilgrims that year and approx one million ( !) tourists in the town to walk thru the holy door. So, I freaked out. But I got goods tips from the veteran posters to take other routes. I´m going to start June 2010 from Santander and walk the Camino del Norte. It´ll be something to be in Santiago with everybody else in July.
