Minister of Culture of Galicia, Roberto Varela, said that the forecast is that eleven million tourists will visit Galicia to coincide with the Year of St James. He indicated that the nights spent on the Camino Frances route could reach 800,000 both in shelters and in surrounding rural accommodation.

Between June and August 2009, a total of 35,323 pilgrims made the Camino de Santiago passing through Castile y Leon, bringing the number of overnight stays to 360,429, representing an increase of 25.9 per percent over the same period last year.

Remember that there is a difference between number of pilgrims and number of beds used. eg: If you walk for 35 days you would use 35+ beds.

In the 2004 Holy Year stats put out on beds used were:

More than 750,000 beds were used in the publicly sponsored albergues between January and October of this year.
Of these 400,000 occupied the albergues on the French Way, 220,000 of whom were accommodated in "polideportivos" (sports facilities) and in Army and Civil Guard-provided tents and facilities.
Other routes:
65,000 on the Portuguese Way, 35,000 on the Via de la Plata and 26,000 on the Fisterra-Muxia Way.

The above numbers did not reflect beds used in privately run facilities
