Thank you for creating this thread because I am new to the pilgrimage. I'm planning to start in Sarria on October 16 and hesitated to post because I'm only doing a shorter walk than most.

Still, I appreciate knowing that someone is aware of my plans because I'll be traveling alone. I plan to only walk 7-8 miles each day and to enjoy the culture and history along the way. I'm recently retired and hope that this walk gives me a sense of clarity about my future as I'll celebrate my 65th birthday on the Camino.

I'm currently walking 5 miles/day with an 8 mile walk on the weekend. I plan to add the backpack and walking poles in September but right now it's very hot here in Florida.

Sure, I may may have been able to sort it all out on my own, but to think of what I would have missed being in your company, I am truly grateful. So the taxi arrives at 6:45am tomorrow, and I will be off and awa, my Scottish Mum would say. I know I'm in for an amazing journey. I know there's a lot of ascent which is not a problem - but I'd like to know if there are any ridges/ sheer drops/ very hairy bits before deciding whether to take this route. I've not managed to find out online or in my guide book.

No, there aren't any very hairy/scary bits if you stay on the path and don't go in bad weather when advised not to. Have a look at this thread or this one, or this one with a video link. If you want even more, you can search on YouTube for "camino day 1" !

Do you plan to start from St. Jean Pied de Port? I'm starting a month earlier, but think it would be quite interesting to do a winter walk. Just be prepared, with full rain gear and many layers!

I'd love to get some advice!! Especially on the Coat factor. Also, I just recently purchased some new hiking boots as my old one's were cracked and no longer water resistant. It has been an uphill battle finding the right fit, since a size 15 is hard to come by! (lol).

Hi everyone!
The first person on our "October" list - @movinmaggie - was due to start walking in SJPP today. I hope she got her walking sticks as planned, and all is going well. I don't think she was expecting to post much here, but I wanted to wish her well. Given the time change, she is likely enjoying dinner in Orisson right now!

I won't be updating this thread with every departure, as @Griffin57 and @Peter Fransiscus have done so nicely for the September thread. I will be checking in, and adding people as requested, but I have some travel and activities that will keep me fairly busy before I start my own camino.

I have unexpectedly found a hole in my calendar, and will walk from Burgos on the 23rd. Just for a week, but I've never been all that concerned about getting anywhere, for me, it's all about the walk. See you on the way!

(This will be the 8th time I walk along a Camino in Spain/Portugal, but I've only been to Santiago twice.)

Hello All.....local transport permitting I hope to depart Roncesvalles on the 31st October for my first Camino flying solo.....guess I will be meeting some of the early November cohort rather than October.......Buen Camino !!!

Welcome to the forum! I might see you on Thursday as I will also start from SJPDP then. However, I will be starting late as I am going only as far as Orisson, so if I don’t see you on the way, Buen Camino! Jill

Thanks - same to you - buen Camino ! Arriving late in sjpp on October 14 - My plan is to start earlyish on the 15th and aim for roncesvalles.

For sure I will meet you on further sections on the Camino.

A friend will be joining me from Burgos (flying to Madrid on Thursday) - she got an unexpected cheap ticket and grabbed it. It will be fun to introduce a first-time walker to the camino. If you hear excited Norwegian chatter and see two tall(-ish) middle-aged women who walk like elks, say hello!

He is now 96 and day to day in pallative care. Hope to meet up with you. Look for a grey beard with a hiking kilt no matter the weather
