2018 Accommodation updates - Camino del Baztán

The Voie du Baztan Facebook page recently shared a few updates. Here's a summary:

1. Accommodation in Bayonne: the document (in French) shows the main options for pilgrims. There are also some reasonably priced hotels near the railway station, including the Hotel Monte Carlo and the Hotel Côte Basque.



For those arriving early in the day, another option might be spend the first night in Ustaritz (one of the Facebook posts suggests this). Ustaritz is about 15kms from Biarritz airport or a 14.5km walk from Bayonne. That might avoid the need to stay in Esplette or Souraïde on the second night, as the Day 2 stage could then be from Ustaritz to Urdax. This would bring an added advantage of tackling the hill out of Urdax in the morning, rather than in the middle of the day (which can be pure torture!).

2. Updated accommodation list (in Spanish):

A few headline points:

• The municipal albergue prices (Berrroeta and Lanz) have gone up from €4 to €6.
• The Urdax albergue was recently renovated (but may still be unheated)
• The Esplette gîte is closed until further notice. There's some very helpful information about other options in @kayagee66's recent thread.
• The guide reminds pilgrims that there are no shops in Lanz, so it's important to buy provisions in Elizondo. I have a vague recollection of seeing somewhere that there is now a little shop in Lanz, but I can't recall the details. Even if that is true, it would still be important to buy what you need in Elizondo. Opening hours in the small villages are quite erratic at the best of times.

For anyone passing through Lanz there is now a very good little shop.

I posted elsewhere on here the the lady who runs the albergue also runs the shop and the excellent casa rurale across the road. We The Baztan 4 stayed at the casa rurale and had it to ourselves. 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen and dining room.
