an increase of 27% on 2003 (ignoring 2004, a holy year), according to figures just released from the pilgrim office.

So the trend is still significantly upwards. I have been half-expecting a backlash, as reports of overcrowding increase, but no sign of that yet.

Detailed figures by month, starting place, etc are yet to be released, but the upward trend appears to be continuing if January 1 2006 is anything to go by: 154 arrived on that day alone.

I think it says that 154 pilgrims have arrived since January 1st (today is January 13th). Still not too bad...

according to the 2003 census, the population of Santiago is 92,365, so the no of pilgrims now arriving in the city in a year exceeds the no of inhabitants :shock:
