667 Italians died yesterday from this plague. 667. Now many of you know I am not Catholic, not even Christian, but these poor souls all required extremaunción/Last Rites before passing on. Meaning that in addition to the doctors the nurses, the caretakers, the grocery store workers serving us, the delivery people, then Priests, not an attempt to insert religion but true recognition, Priests also deserve our respect and admiration.

Sorry there are no priests allowed. Not even next of kin.. There is a last rite from a far distance.
Deceased are put naked in coffin and brought to cemetary.
No service.Nothing.
The army sends vehicles for transportation because funeral companies cannot handle the influx.
That is the reality. And it is beyond devastating.

Many people know how much funerals are part of life in Ireland. I saw a little video this evening on national tv, taken from a hearse, showing people lining the streets, and then approaching the cemetery...each person separated by the recommended distance. Normally, country funerals have cars parked for a couple of km on either side of the townland, with traffic Marshall’s keeping things moving. I have just read an account of current situation around Bergamo, exactly as Sabine wrote. Sad, sad, sad.

Sobering, @SabineP

I wonder if people would comply better with social distancing and self-isolation if they could see this reality.

I went to the supermarket this morning to buy tissues for my wife and realised that it is absolutely impossible to achieve social distancing in a Supermarket aisle here even if crowds are down. But I seem to remember supermarket aisles being wider in Sainsburies in the UK than they are here.
