Abandoned Items

Camino Frances (2014)
I've heard frequently that pilgrims abandon equipment shortly after setting out for Santiago. Is there anything I can rely on being abandoned (and in the event that I can't find it, it won't be a crippling loss or I can get it in town later)

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
If I understand your question properly, lots of people pitch their boots because they weren't properly broken in, weighed too much or their low cut shoes could do the job, then later run into a week of rain and mud and buy new boots which never get properly broken in, deja vu. Sleeping bags, thermal rests and sweatshirts are piled high at many albergues, free for the taking. There are many places to buy new socks as after a week or two of walking in your bargain brand they are beyond repair. Pack light because there are enough large cities along the way to buy what you forgot to pack. Is that the information you are looking for?

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Remember that the items that were abandoned are generally those things that someone thought wouldn't be particularly useful to them for the remainder of their camino. You might have made a similar assessment were you in the same position. It also means that they are keeping the items they think would be most useful. Relying on the discard boxes to equip yourself might not the best approach.

But then just imagine the fabulous vide grenier one could organize as they walk the Camino.
