Hi, Bren, and a warm welcome to the Forum. :)

I book a reservation even when arriving in early afternoon. Given your arrival time, in your place, I would be more relaxed about getting to St Jean knowing I didn't need to focus on finding a place at that time of evening. :)

I've used Booking.com.

Yes I'd advise booking in SJPP to ensure a bed at a decent place. Based on tales from other pilgrims there are a few places that may not be the best start to your walk. Early September last year the whole town was full day after day, however the fantastic pilgrim office made sure everyone got a place even if it was only a mat in the gymnasium.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Well guys,

I ended up in a hostel for 40 buks.
spent 100 on the 1st place so blessing in disguise.

travel - airport bus outside to bayone station - train sjpdp - correct??

It's whatever you are comfortable with. My recommendation is the "pass" and enjoy your hike. Booking ahead of time takes away from the spontaneity of your journey. I you start early, you shouldn't have any problem finding a bed. Happy Trails.
