Advice for caminoing

Hello Caminoers
I am planning to walk part of the caminon in May, possibly meeting up with some friends. Where on the web can I find info on the distances between the different cities?
I will probably fly Ryan air to Vallalolid, take bus to either Logrona/ Burgos/Leon and walk for some 8-9 days (then probably try to take a bus back to Vallalolid). I take it there is no way of reaching Santiago de Compostela in that time? Although I am in decent shape so walking some 20 km/day should be possible.
Thanks for any advice
Liisa

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Lisa,

Try to get some impressions of the route. In my opinion is the route after Leon more nice than before Leon: but that's very personal. Take a look at the different diaries which are on the net to be found with sometimes a loot of nice pictures.

You can easily get from Valladolid to Leon with train or bus.
Train is leaving at 17.01 and arriving in Leon at 18.45.

http://www.alsa.es/ can give you info about a bus.

Buen camino!

Via Verde from Valladolid to Fromista

Although this information may not be relevant to your 9 day camino it may be useful. The Spanish Tourist Office provides an A4 sheet with a list of Greenways or "Vias Verdes" (disused railway lines for walkers and cyclists).
Two that are of interest to walkers and cyclists on the Camino are El Canal Castilla II and III. These take a route from Valladolid to Fromista and may be useful to anyone using the Ryanair Valladolid flight.
El Canal de Castilla II goes Valladolid - Duenas - Palencia and is 46km
El Canal de Castilla III goes Palencia – Grijota - Villaumbrales - Ribas de Campos - Amayuelas - Pina de Campos – Fromista and is 39 km.
Those who have already walked or cycled the Camino may remember the stretch just before Fromsita which follows the canal.

Eleven days would do well for a León to Santiago venture. The daily average is 25 km.
Here is a possible itinerary ...

León.....274.9
Villadangos del Paramo.....289.2
Astorga.....258.7
Rabanal del Camino.....238.1
Ponferrada.....205.4
Villafranca del Bierzo.....183.0
O Cebreiro.....153.0
Sarria.....113.8
Portomarín.....91.8
Palas de Rei.....67.3
Arzúa.....38.9
Santiago.....0.0

Less than this will be a bit of a push, but it is do-able in nine. You would have to bump up your daily average to around 31km. The 6 km per day increase may not seem like much, but the cumulative effect is greater than the sum of the parts. Astorga to Santiago in nine days is very reasonable and provides a greater enjoyment of the process.

Buen Camino,

Questions for Paul and a thanks for William

Paul - Where are these Diaries on the net you talk about? Do you have addresses? Do you have proper search words that will bring up the ones you are talking about? Thanks :D

William - Bless you and thanks for the site with the maps and info. It is so appreciated.
