After Santiago

With the help of many people on this Forum and on the walk, I arrived in Santiago this week! What an experience!

I'm taking everything in, greeting new friends as they walk in-- and also thinking about what's next. Hoping folks here might have some ideas.

I want to hang out with a friend in Madrid for a few days, and I'd also like to see some of the northern coast of Spain, between Asturias and San Sebastian. Also, I liked Burgos-- and some folks I met there-- enough to want to drop in again.

It seems like I could get to either the north coast or to Madrid fairly easily from Santiago. And either could work as a jumping off point for France and Germany.

So...any thoughts on best ways to route this-- or other locales to consider? (Tomorrow I'm doing the day bus tour to Muxia and Finisterre)

I wouldn't overthink it. How about just following your nose and see where it leads you?
Go down to the train station, get the next one out to either destination and go from there.

I'm not stalking you.......honest

I went to Madrid after finishing and can highly recommend it, very relaxed for a capital city with great scenery, food and art. I was short on time so flying made sense and really wasn't much more expensive than getting the train.

I hope you will spend an extra day or two in Santiago.
See the rooftop of the Cathedral, the museum.
Visit the Museu de Pobo Gallego, an AWESOME free folk museum.
Just hang.

I generally take a bus back to Madrid.
Lots to see there too.

You can find REALLY inexpensive flights to France and Italy, as well.
Have fun!

What Joy..... I thought about your trip from time to time, wondering how you were doing and keeping you in my prayers. A pilgrimage well and truly done.

I've had thoughts about post-Camino visits to other parts of Spain, and I think that, time permitting, I will head to the Northern Basque-Country coast. I want to enjoy the vistas and the cuisine, and get to experience some of the culture of that region. If for some reason I can't do it post-Camino, then I will return to walk the Camino Norte in 2018 or 2019.

Welcome to the club Joe,

I walked into Santiago a little more than a week ago and also bussed to Muxia and Finesterre. Did you make it out to Cape Faro?

I have some extra time on my hands so I flew to Bilbao by Vueling Air where there is some art to be seen. (E.g. See latest blog post at http://www.jjkpryde.com ).

In a few days I'm planning to walk towards San Sebastián to take in some of the Bay of Biscay views and seafood before heading back home.

Looking forward to hearing how you solve this problem.

Congratulations Joe! So many great choices and if certain places touched you then that is a great place to start. For me (right now) I love the whole Galicia region as well as Lisbon, Porto, and the small coastal towns of Western Portugal and Spain.

Just my two cents. I love La Coruna. About an hour north of Santiago by train. Also if you head down to Madrid from Santiago? The night train is pretty cool

Consider Salamanca or Segovia. Both fantastic small cities!

Way to go Joe!

I've always fancied the FEVE railway from Ferrol to teh Basque country.

If you like eating fish the the restaurants in San Sebastian are devine!

The Basque Country, especially Donostia-San Sebastian, would easily get my vote.

Then again, I loved it so much here that we worked out a way to get to live here 1/4 of the year, and plan to live here full time as soon as possible. So I'm biased.
