There was an article in the Guardian concerning the origin of the Albariño grape variety. It would appear that it is native ("peculiar" using older English) to Gallicia and probably drives from a cultivation of a wild woodland vine variety.
The proof is down to comparing the remains found in Roman sites to the modern grape and finding they are similar. There are no similar varieties found any where else in Europe. The vine has been exported elsewhere in the world.
The scientists would like to find proof by finding the native wild woodland vine, but are unlikely to do this since most native woodlands have been replaced by Eucalypti species.

At least in Germany you can get Albarino at decent prices from LIDLs online store. Might be possible aswell in other countries, not sure though.

But i have to admit: Having a bottle at Mar de Fora, watching the sunset, is a completely different experience to having one back home.
