woke up in SJPP this morning to pouring rain! Happily by the time we were ready to leave it had stopped.

We enjoyed the walk to Valcarlos - well maybe not so much that last very steep uphill to the albergue! As soon as we reached the door the rain started again - so we felt very lucky!

We are at the municipal albergue and it's surprisingly quiet here, only 8 of us! I suspect it will be a bit different when we get to Roncesvalles tomorrow!

If it reaches you in time Wild Place, stay on the road until the water fountain.
You will know this turn off.
The bottom of the valley beside the river will be mud and slosh
Enjoy Burgette ,

The good news is that uphill at the end of day 1 is worse than any uphill you will face on day 2!!! Buen Camino.

And the worst thing about that uphill is you have to walk all the way down just to walk all the way back up on the other side. No one ever warned me about that! :)

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Thanks for all the advice! We didn't find it too muddy but I found it hard going, I think I was a little dehydrated to start with but had plenty of water with me. Stopped to eat salted nuts and a little chocolate. The day was very warm and it was good to see Roncesvalles! couldn't get onto the wifi at Roncesvalles yesterday so no update from there apart from hearing that there were 400 pilgrims in the village last night!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

The reason why we always walk the extra 3.5 km to Burgette.
Any choice of accommodation and a lovely village.
A good night sleep and making the next hard stage very doable.

This is EXCELLENT advice. Burguete is a great little town! #caminohacks

I did the Valcarlos trail in 2017 (50-80 km winds and rain with max temp of 8 - without wind chill at Orrison). Arrived Roncesvalles at 13.00. Checked at the albergue - no admittance before 14.00 and that was in order of arrival. So caught up with two girls I met in Valcarlos who needed medical treatment in Burguette. Shared a taxi and went on to Espinal, stayed at Haizea. Showed and having a beer by 14.00??!!

Long memories 2015 and 2017
Relevant today I dought it
On arrival in sjpdp I sometimes walk to valcarlos
I walked to Valcarlos in April and stayed the night at the very nice municipal in 2015 as Orrison was full...and again in 2017 because I loved the break it provided as a halfway point. The village is charming and the walk very peaceful with lots of variety. We had no wind and dry pants upon arrival at Roncevalles, whereas many who walked the Napoleon route had slipped in mud and one said "the wind went in one ear and out the other"!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.
