Hi all, long time no see.
Just a quick one, my partner suffers with hypermobility and is looking for any tips regarding ankle support..
Does anyone know any hints or tips specifically related to walking with hypermobility EDS? (Boots? Straps? Compression?)
I hope you're all well.
Hugs

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
hej, i would they it's depending on how heavy the hypermobility is. The person itself needs to feel safe by walking. Stability gives a proper, high hiking boot and socks a size smaller + walking Sticks. but is hard to say if this would be enough for your partner.

I would consult an orthopedist to be safe and clear about the options. i wouldn't risk anything and to stop a journey is also not nice.

safe steps
Dennis

Unfortunately I have no hints to help with your partner's ankle issue, @andywild, but want to welcome you back to the forum. At first glance I thought an old thread had been resurrected.😅

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

I'm hyper-mobile myself, on top of being very overweight.

1st step is to go see a physiotherapist to get a proper assessment (posture, gait, etc,). Go private if needed, it's money very well spent. A decent one should be able to tell you straight away if (s)he can help you or not with exercises or if something else / more is needed

I resolved my problems with specific exercises to strengthen the muscles in the lower leg to stabilize the ankle and hip exercises to stabilize my knees. I'm still hyper-mobile and overweight, but I'm strong enough to support myself without aids for my knees and ankles, These helped more than everything else combined (orthopedic shoes, ankle supporting boots with special insoles,....). I go over my ankles less often and I have a lot fewer sprained ankles than I used to.

Haven't worn or needed to wear high "ankle supporting" boots or any type ankle supports in years.

Hyper-mobile here, kid with EDS.
I’ve been to see all the specialists, physiotherapists, etc.
Good shoes with ankle support — which is about individual fit, not a particular brand etc.
…more walking every day rather than less…
K-tape for stability….
proper use of poles (really helps with the hips and knees in particular).
And weighted ankle and knee lifts while seated
If I can think of anything else in my bag of tricks, I’ll pass it along.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

I was just thinking of you a few days ago, wondering how you were doing, and checked the postings to see if I had missed one of yours. Nice to see you!
