Another question... only 5 routes into Santiago?

Hi - there are only 5 routes into Santiago and I'd like to describe that other routes feed into those. Any information?

the routes correspond to the following medieval gates, btw, in the (largely anticlockwise) order given in the Codex Calixtinus:

Porta Francigena, now Puerta del Camino: Camino Frances
Porta Poennae, now Porta de la Pena: Camino Ingles (which goes along the Rua Porta da Pena)
Porta de Subfratibus, now Puerta de S Martin: -
Porta de sancto Peregrino, now Puerta de la Trinidad: Camino de Fisterra (acc to the Codex, the Trinidad chapel just outside this gate was where pilgrims were buried, which I assume is where the Holy Pilgrim name comes from)
Porta de Falgueriis, now Puerta Fajera: Camino Portugues
Porta de Susannis, now Puerta de Mamoa: Camino Sanabres/Plata
Porta de Macereliis, now Puerta de Mazerelos, the only one which still survives: - ("per quam pretiosus bacchus venit ad urbem")

Porta de Subfratibus, now Puerta de S Martin: -

Porta de Macereliis, now Puerta de Mazerelos, the only one which still survives: - ("per quam pretiosus bacchus venit ad urbem")

Wasn't the latter used for wine deliveries?

this seems to be the road from the NE - Sta Catalina, Bembibre and beyond. No major traffic, as there weren't any ports along that coast.

Porta de Macereliis, now Puerta de Mazerelos, the only one which still survives

There's a new route planned from the Ribeiro, the Camiño Xacobeo Miñoto-Ribeiro, which I assume will use this gate. Also, it's the nearest for those who arrived by train ;-)

yes, that's what 'precious bacchus' is referring to. Whoever wrote this was presumably a cleric, but would seem to have been fond of his vino.

Several other smaller gates (pedestrians only) were opened in later centuries.

Thanks. I also meant to mention to you that the entry of Camino Portuguese into Santiago now has a variant just beyond Milladoiro. Just before the foot of the long hill which goes up past the hospital there is now another waymarked route with a more gradual incline which passes the church of St Augustine and the Psychiatric hospital then goes direct to the Plaza Roja then onwards to the Alameda. People here in the office knew nothing about but there are yellow arrows all the way.
