Press Release
American Pilgrims on the Camino - Western North Carolina Chapter

If you’ve ever thought about walking all or part of the Camino de Santiago– or are just curious about the trek - here’s an opportunity to hear and see what it’s all about. This free presentation by Flat Rock resident Bob Palmer, a rookie hiker who walked the Camino in 2012 at age 76, is considerably different from Martin Sheen’s Hollywood portrayal of the experience in his recent movie “The Way.”

Starting in France, this ancient pilgrimage crosses the Pyrenees and ends up 500 miles later in the Spanish city of Santiago, not far from the Atlantic coast. If 500 miles is not your idea of a stroll in the park, then you can try it for two or three days or whatever suits your fancy.

Sponsored by the local chapter of the American Pilgrims on the Camino, you’ll have the opportunity to meet and talk with others who have made the trip. Get your questions answered about walking solo or with friends, safety (especially for single women), where to stay, where to eat, equipment needed and not-needed, the religious angle, how to get there, etc.

The program is free but since it is held in a relatively small classroom at REI in Biltmore Park, registration is highly recommended. To sign up, go to www.rei.com/stores/Asheville.

Monday, Feb. 3 from 7:00 - 8:30 pm
REI, 31 Schenck Parkway, Asheville
Telephone 687-0918.
