Hello!
I'm on the Camino Portuguese- may arrive in Santiago just after September 16. Can I meet someone to advise on how the Camino is maintained so I can pursue making an extension ?

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Hi, Mary,

If by extension you mean route either to Fisterra or Muxia let me assure you that both ways are marked as good as Camino Frances and it's almost impossible to get lost. Infrastructure is more than adequate too. More info here:

Buen Camino!

In 2015 the tourist office in Santiago de Compostela gave out a free guide for the walks to Muxia and Finisterra (in English). I found a version of this online at: http://www.caminodesantiago.gal/documents/17639/155453/Fisterra Muxía - Plano - EN.pdf?version=1.0

If the PDF file linked to above does not work the file may have been renamed or moved. To locate it (or newer versions) try a Google search for these words: Santiago Muxia Fisterra Langosteira Amarela Vilar Sardiñeiro Grissaphan Fontana Laffi Ultreia Costa da Morte Codex Calixtinus Xacobeo Galicia -izquierda

Sorry I wasn't clear in my question. I hope to learn from others what the process of making a physical extension of the Camino in another non European country requires. Thank you :)

There are at least as many answers to that question as there are countries. The difficulty is that it is a hard process to duplicate the Camino Frances even in Spain. The Camino Portugues is growing rapidly, as is the Camino Ingles. The common complaint for them is the lack of affordable accommodations. Except perhaps for the Camino del Norte, attempts to expand the use of other caminos has been met with failure, most noticeably the Camino Invierno. Each route has its advocates, but has not really caught on. There are often suggestions that a Camino Frances in the U.S. would be desirable, but there is simply no way to do it. Hiking trails have their supporters, but adding affordable hostels has proven impossible. Even the Appalachian Trail only has a couple of hostels.

Good luck with your project. If it comes to fruition, let the Forum know and you may recruit some pilgrims.

Of course, there's no history that could be adapted to Camino Frances on American soil. There's just one Camino Frances and there are many Caminos de Santiago throughout Europe. And that's it. They are ways to the shrine.

I'm a pagan, just to mention ;)

All other ways are other pilgrim ways, hiking/mountain trails or educational paths. So the answer to the OP would be IMHO - not possible :)

From the religious point of view and from the historical also. It just doesn't pass although Camino de Madrid did get much better than Invierno @falcon269 mentioned. Strange. But then again (walked both in a row) not so much.
