At last, my wife gets to go

After 5 caminos over 6 years, I am going to have the immense pleasure (for the first time), of accompanying my wife on a 10 day segment of the VdlP from Seville to Merida at the beginning of May. But it’s complicated. All my caminos have been on a bike, and my wife has no interest in that; she’s a walker. I’m not - my knees won’t allow it. So we’ve come up with a hybrid plan. She’ll walk and I’ll ride and be the back-up mule. I can imagine me riding back and forth on the 25km stages, ferrying water and good cheer. Can’t wait.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

You are going to have a lot of spare time on your hands as you will be limited to cycling walking-distances. Bring a good book! Incidentally, I also have bad knees but I get cortisone injections about two weeks before hand and I never have even a hint of a problem on the Camino.

You can be sure that I've given some thought to this, Murray, and it IS going to be an interesting experiment. I would be reluctant to try it on a typical long camino. My wife is quite nervous about her ability to walk the distances involved so my support role is obviously crucial. I anticipate doing frequent "boomerang" legs, a few km ahead and back, so I'll probably end up doing a reasonable distance.
I'm wondering if anyone else has done this.
As for the knees, it's more than 10 years since a specialist told me that I'm virtually operating bone-on-bone. I still marvel at my ability to ride, but of course it's a no-impact form of exercise.

When my father-in-law was recovering from spinal surgery we would go out walking - that is to say, I would walk and he was on his recumbent trike. He would nip off ahead for a while and come pedalling back to me with a big grin on his face. Some people might be frustrated by this but I sense you are really going as a team and will be a great support. Maybe take a look at @Paladina 's profile pic for inspiration! Just don't pull over and take a nap under a tree waiting for her to catch up - you know what happened to the hare.

I have a similar one of my great grandparents, taken in their back garden :).

Buen camino!

Cyclists of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains - and perhaps a bit of excess baggage on the way.

Wow! I don't think I'd ever get my wife over the Conor Pass sitting on the rear pannier-rack!

No, you’d need a hefty Dutch roadster and a Dutch cycle path - something the Camino does not provide!

Congratulations

In May 2016 I walked with my oldest daughter.
This May I will walk with my younger daughter.
In May 2020 I will walk with my youngest child (son).
My wife and I will walk together shortly thereafter as she wanted me to have one on one time with each child.

I hope you share some great memories and I'm certain she will appreciate why you enjoy the Camino so much.
