Seeing the number of new members on the forum, with some of them being Australian, it occurred to me that some Aussies may not know about the Australian Friends of the Camino (AFotC) which was founded in 2011. I thought I would post some of the benefits of membership. This is not the only group in the country, but it is the only group that has received, from the Cathedral authority, permission to issue a credencial. There are numerous groups meeting around the country and we post on our website details of meeting times and contacts for them – some meet to go for walk together, some meet for a meal, some for coffee and a chat – they are all different.

What does AFotC provide to our members? We provide;
  • free, booklet style, credencials to our members (i.e. only to our members), and you can keep getting them for the life of your membership. One member has been issued with 22 credencials over the eleven years of his membership.
  • an interesting and informative quarterly newsletter, either electronically or a hard copy depending on your choice when you join. The extra fee for the hard copy of the newsletter is worth it if you like to hold something in your hand when you read (and it is useful for loaning to your friends).
  • a very helpful guide to the city of Santiago itself, written for us by Johnnie Walker a forum member.
  • regular ENews emails with any new and relevant information that comes our way that we think might be of help or interest to our members.
If interested there is a membership form on our website https://www.afotc.org/

Membership fees cover the cost of running such an organization, extra funds are used to assist with the infrastructure on the Camino. Over the past eleven years we have donated to both albergues run by the CSJ, a donativo albergue in Burgos, and to Peaceable projects an organization that assists, with practical help, the donativo albergues. We also gave a donation to the victims of the St James Eve train crash.

For your interest, having only issued 4 credencials since the start of Covid, 3 in Dec 2021, this year we have already issued 40. Aussies are on the move – slowly, but they are preparing to head off on the Camino.

Our logo has the shell, superimposed with the Southern Cross, on it. Both are symbols for finding your way – one on the Camino, the other in the Southern Hemisphere.
