Hello, right now we are in the planning stages of walking the CF. Are backpacks allowed to stay with us on the train as carry on?

How about the bus? ex: Finisterre to Santiago
Thanks.

Taking backpacks on the train is allowed but space may be in short supply for larger packs. On buses you can usually take a day pack on board but larger packs are generally stowed in a hold area under the seats.

I've never been on a train before, so do the packs have to be checked in or is there a storage compartment on each cabin.
Thanks.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

Train, yes. Bus - depends on the bus - but I think I had to put mine underneat for Finisterre to Santiago - not 100% sure though.

Over the head rack for smaller packs. Storage space in the front/rare of the train car for bigger packs. Sometimes a space in the car between some of the seats - not always though. My 30L usually fit overhead on trains. If I had a window seat - I could also keep it on the floor between my legs and the window as long as it was 30L or smaller. Aisle seat - not good to keep on the floor as it blocks the person at the window seat from accessing the aisle.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

We usually take the train. The comfort class train coaches will handle your backpacks right above where you sit. There are racks at the front/rear of most coaches but these fill up quickly.

As you are planning, let me tell you how very hilly the last 100 km out of Sarria is. I am adjusting all my plans to walk less km per day.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
You have never been on a train!!! I hope you really enjoy it as a child would. I am fascinated with trains and planes. They never stop to amaze me. The rest of me has grown to 62 but the part that uses trains and planes is still stuck at 8.

If you use a local bus to get around, just remember to take your rucksack off and carry it as soon as (or before) you get on, especially if it's "standing room only".

My husband has bowled me over more than once with his backpack standing in a line and he'd be more dangerous on a bus! Do take off your backpack and carry it in front of you on buses, trains, and planes!

Yep, I've never been on a train. I am really excited and looking forward to this new experience.

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.

Lol, I will remember to take the backpack off and carry it, thanks.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
You have your answer plus good advice already but if I may just add what is probably obvious but if using overhead luggage racks PLEASE make sure that your bag is safely stowed.

Some of the larger stations make you go through an airport style security check.

When I travelled from SdC to Ferrol a group of us wandered onto the platform only to be turfed off again and made to go through security.

A young woman had a Swiss Army Knife and was told to bury it deep in the middle of her pack if she wanted to take it with her.
