Barcelona to Roncesvalles

New Member
I have had to have a slight change in my plans. Instead of flying from London to Biarrits and starting in SJPP, I am now departing from Mallorca, I plan to take the ferry to Barcelona. There doesnt seem to be a direct train route to Roncesvalles. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best route to take from BArcelona. I will also be looking for accommodation in Barcelona, somewhere that will store all my worldy possessions for 4-6 weeks.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Kind regards and blue skies

Hi Alli,

This is a tough one... I did some websearching regarding how to get from Barcelona to Roncesvalles. I found a "how to get to Roncesvalles" here:
http://caminodesantiago.consumer.es/roncesvalles.html

En autobús desde Barcelona: Vibarsa. 948220997

Diario, 8.00, 15.30, 23.30
Precio: 28.25 euros

...it's in Spanish, but it indicates that there are 3 busses from Barcelona to Roncesvalles daily. 8.00, 15.30 and 23.30. The buscompany looks like it is called "Vibarsa" (phone 948220997).

Regarding lodging in Barcelona. I have actually never been there (it's on my list), but I kind of like the hotel-booking-site that RyanAir has set up.

http://www.ryanairhotels.com

If you look, some of these hotels are a bit outside town, but have a look and see if you find anything.

I hope this helped.

Greetings from Santiago,
Ivar

I think you're misreading this webpage, Ivar. That is "Llegar a Pamplona". There you change to the daily evening bus to Roncesvalles.

[PS: looks like the quote within quote resets the font size]

You are right Peter, the heading says "How to get to Roncesvalles", but then there is a sub-heading saying "how to get to Pamplona".

The times I indicated earlier are times for the Barcelona - Pamplona bus, and then you need to find a connection between Pamplona and Roncesvalles. This is listed further below on the same page.

Autobús [Pamplona - Roncesvalles]

De lunes a viernes, 18.00
Sábado: 16.00
Domingos: No hay servicio
Precio: 3.91 euros

Monday - Friday 18.00, Saturday at 16.00, Sunday no bus.

Thanks for catching that Peter and have a good trip Alli.

Hi there,

There is also the train from Barcelona to Pamplona: Cost from E31 for touriast class.
They depart at 7.03am, 12h30 and 22h30.
Arrive: 12h16: 18h30 and 05h34.
(There is NO train to Roncesvalles - only the Lamontanessa bus which leaves weekdays at 18h00 and arrives about 1 1/2 hours later.)
Check it out at http://www.renfe.es/ingles

You can post your stuff ahead to yourself in Barcelona (or Pamplona). The Post Offices (Correos) have special pilgrim boxes - some large enough to take a suitcase - and they will keep it for you in Santiago. At the moment the litterature says for 30 days but I'm sure if you put a big, bold collection date on the box, they will hold onto it for you. (I emailed the Post Office a few weeks ago and suggested that they keep boxes for more than 30 days at Santiago for pilgrims doing the camino).
Buen Camino.

A selection of Camino Jewellery
Pamplona - SJPdP

Another route to SJPdP:

1. Bus from Pamplona to San Sebastian (aka Donostia) 2 hrs
2. euskotrain from San Sebastian to Bayona 20"
3. Take the local train from Bayona to SJPdP 40"

A nice little walk will take you to the albergue, has plenty of beds.

Buen Camino,

Barcelona

I highly recommend spending a day or two in Barcelona. The architecture of Gaudi is amazing and the people are warm and friendly. The food is also fantastic.

You'll be seeing plenty of churches during your walk, but I recommend visiting Monteserrat and the statue of the Virgin Mary enshrined there. It's outside the city, but you can do the trip in a day. It had connections to several saints, including St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits.

barcelona-santiago

Well, if u do go to Monserrate, I have been told that you can go on walking to Santiago from there. I understand there is an infrastructure of albergues, perhaps not as well developed as in the Camino Frances. I have not done this Camino myself, am sharing what Catalan peregrinos have told me.

Buen Camino,

Hi I suggest a good guide book has this type of information in it . here are some options:

or St James Fraternity site: http://www.csj.org.uk/camfrantravelnotes.htm

I travelled in November 2007 from Barcelona to Pamplona to Roncesvalles to start Camino.

Pamplona to Roncesvalles: Local bus service to Roncesvalles, run by Autocares Artieda, http://www.autocaresartieda.com, Mon-Fri dep.1800, Sat 1600, 4.35€. Check availability early and late season, (948 302 787)

http://www.turismo.navarra.es/eng/organ ... obuses.htm

Also a taxi service from Pamplona to either Roncesvalles or Saint Jean. It is operated by Francisco Igoa Martinez (649 725 951; he uses an 8 seat VW minibus. The fares for this service are not known but standard rates are in the region of 45-55€ to Roncesvalles and 75-85€ to Saint Jean.

Train from Barn Sants Barcelona : Barcelona to Pamplona: Cost from E32 for tourista class.
They depart at 7.03am, 12h30 and 22h30.
Arrive: 12h16: 18h30 and 05h34.

I left at 7am Barcelona arrive at 1pm with hours to spare in Pamplona until bus at 18:00 to Roncesvalles. Did some sight seeing but much was closed as siesta time...
You could leave Barcelona at midday spend night in Pamplona and Bus next day to Roncesvalles and then taxi which would give you afternoon in SJPDP, options vary and depends on it cost of bed / room versus taxi in some ways.
or Getting to Pamplona by bus http://www.vibasa.es/horarios2.php?ididioma=2

From Barcelona to San Sebastian
- By Bus : Vibasa buses leave from Barcelona Sants train station at 08.00, 15.30 and 23.50 (23.45 on weekends) . The tickets are approximately 30€. The trip takes 7 hours. Call Vibasa on +34 902 10 13 63 for availability, or check http://www.vibasa.es (

Otherwise you connect from Paris to Bayonne

Check it out at http://www.renfe.es/ingles
For hotels:

You can post your stuff ahead to yourself in Barcelona (or Pamplona). The Post Offices (Correos) have various sized boxes - some large enough to take a bag or suitcase - and they will keep it for you in Santiago. 30 days is meant to be time for holding ? & I would write big, bold collection date on the box. FEd EX and other servcies costly so Post office is economic and reliable.

or try service like this http://www.caminotravelcenter.com/lugga ... ompostela/

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Search for places to stay in Barcelona ( and elsewhere)

http://www.hostelworld.com/

good site if you do search by specific types of accommodation & can search by rating and read customer reviews. I have found reliable.
they have from camping to upmarket hotels and apartments & Bed&Breakfast ; so not just hostels . You can see instantly if booked so easy to look for free dates, prices.
