In Our Time

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the idea and experience of Christian pilgrimage in Europe from the 12th to the 15th centuries, which figured so strongly in the imagination of the age. For those able and willing to travel, there were countless destinations from Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostela to the smaller local shrines associated with miracles and relics of the saints. Meanwhile, for those unable or not allowed to travel there were journeys of the mind, inspired by guidebooks that would tell the faithful how many steps they could take around their homes to replicate the walk to the main destinations in Rome and the Holy Land, passing paintings of the places on their route.

A fascinating listen. I've learned a lot.

It's also a helpful reminder for those who fret about how a modern-day Camino compares with the medieval experience, because the contributors set out in some detail how there has always been a significant commercial and transactional aspect to Christian pilgrimages.

A really good episode for everyone. There is a lot there and the reading list is worth reviewing for those interested in gaining a deeper understanding of medieval pilgrimage.

Thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking. Specifically in the bonus offering where they discussed relics that are purported to be of Jesus Christ himself. I find that they spoke, quite amusingly, about the "Holy Prepuce", yet ignored the 14th Century, contact relic, Shroud of Turin, which scientifically supports being the burial linen of Christ.
Getting back to the program itself, the parallels with medieval pilgrimage and those of today are remarkable proving that the more things change, the more they remain the same.

It was a good listen. To anyone not familiar with the programme, it broadcasts about 20x per annum and takes a different topic each time -the range is quite astounding. All are available as podcasts.

The contributors are very UK-centric (it is the BBC after all), but are generally experts in their field. Lord (Melvyn) Bragg steers the discussion, having the benefit of previous briefing, obviously.

I just finished. It was fascinating - but In Our Time usually is.

I laughed when I heard that the debate between who was and wasn't a "real" pilgrim goes back over a millennium. I didn't catch the Latin word for the curious and the adventurer-seekers - was it curiositas? I didn't even know that curiosity was a sin at one point.

The scholars are a little dry but they are historical scholars. Parts are really interesting and it does highlight that there wasn't; much discussion among Pilgrims then regarding which trail runners to buy or which $400 Gortex rain coat . But there are some surprising similarities. Like a mention of Medieval "Virtual Caminos", The rise of Pilgrims being shunned and staying in the most basic of settings, the realization of towns and villages along the different Caminos to the economic benefits of Pilgrims passing through, the meaning of Pilgrimage and the different ways it was expressed. Just a whole host of things. I think lots of my fellow pilgrims would find this interesting. The discussion is not just about the Camino de Santiago. It does focus on the three main ones, Santiago, Rome and Jerusalem, but many other pilgrimages are discussed throughout Europe.
