Just did this walk a few days ago - on the beautiful section of Stones and Water - just after leaving Armenteiro , there is a local fellow accosting women. (Happened to several of us) Just a heads up to not get into any conversation with him, keep you eyes forward!

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

I had this happen to me several years ago near the wine fountain of Irache. I call him The Dirty Old Man of Irache. When I tried to say goodbye and get away, he felt me up. I told him, “Mi esposa no lo gusta” in my fractured Spanish. I pushed him away, and I know he got the idea.

I hope you reported this to police. It doesn't do much good posting here if the problem is there on the ground.
Im actually happy it was posted here. And I do hope it can be communicated or reported on the ground as well, but any warnings are super appreciated. - especially for some of us who are or are planing to on walking solo.

Thank you for this post. My wife and I will be walking that way in the near future. By chance, did you stay at the Albergue in Armenteira? If so, was it difficult to get a bed there?

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Just added a new sentence to my must know Spanish list… hahahaha… thank you!

Thank you for posting this information, could you please be a bit more specific on what he was doing? Thanks.

Age and description might help as well. Without being an apologist for it, a well-known issue in Portugal and in Spain is that many elderly family members remain at home… and many have marked dementia that expresses itself, frequently enough, in sexual aggression as well as other forms of aggression. Which is to say: a call to the police to notify local healthcare agencies (centros de saluda) and to handle the policing matter of getting the person off the streets.

When I spent 2 days in the ER of a hospital in Portugal in 2019, I counted 27 extremely elderly people on gurneys, many with some form of dementia expressed with both sexual and physical aggression.

It’s just very very sad… and very dangerous/traumatizing for those who are accosted. and heart-breaking for families involved on the ground.

If it’s a younger person, then there’s less likelihood of healthcare and criminal issues overlapping.

Unfortunately this happens all too often along the Camino and all women should be aware at all times especially those walking solo.

Thanks @Faye Walker for bringing this ( again ) to our attention.
Also take into consideration that in rural Portugal day care facilities for the elderly with dementia or specialised help for those adults with intellectual learning dissabilities are not so widespread as in the north of Europe.
I encountered an older man on the Portugues whom quite innocently made a remark towards me. Quickly his two sisters came to me and apologised extensively for his behaviour. They were not able to send the brother to a facility on a daily basis seeing it would involve more than fours hours of commuting.

Again no apologise for the behaviour as described in the OP!

I'm fairly confident that we saw this guy this morning (I'd seen the photo last night and showed it to my husband). We saw him walking towards us in the direction of Armenteira as we walked along the right side of the river with all the mills. We saw him again a little later coming back, away from Armenteira, as we stopped to look at the recreation of the galician village. A few moments later we also saw him talking to another elderly chap.

Each time my husband walked between me and your chap and whilst each time he briefly stopped and spoke, he seemed friendly and he did nothing more. I don't know what he did to you or the other women, and I was not alone so of course he did nothing to me, but my husband felt that perhaps the guy was a little overly familiar and even maybe he had some mental health Issues?

Our encounters were very brief so it's impossible to know anything other than what we saw, which was nothing, but if it is at all possible could someone ask a local policeman (or the alburgue?) if there is a chap locally who know to some cause concern with ladies?

I should also add that we don't know 100% that it's the same guy and we could have been looking for someone who fitted the description because of the post... if that makes sense?

Yes basically same thing happened - that walk we were on goes for quite a ways before you reach anything. At the first bar we reached we told the proprietor and asked her to report. Later that day when we reached Vila de Arosa we talked to others who had been approached by him earlier on the same segment. He stopped us to talk about about the walk and seemed nice enough til we said adios!

I sent a message ahead on what’s app requesting bunks. It was completely full the night we were there so I was glad we had! There is also the monastery (I had emailed but was full) and a parador hotel - that’s it!
