Between Madrid and Ponferrada

I have an extra day to spend between Madrid and Ponferrada. I arrive at Madrid airport 29/5/22 around 8:30 in the morning. I need to be in El Acebo in the afternoon of 30/5/22 where I will spend the night before walking into Ponferrada the next day. Astorga and Leon are my top contenders to spend the night on the 29th. Any suggestions about what to see and do in either of these places? Are there other places that I should not miss but still get me to El Acebo by late afternoon? I will be traveling by train or bus. Thanks!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Zamora is a cool town and you can take the train from Madrid? Then bus/train to Ponferrada the next day? Maybe not this trip, but it is a cool town.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
@Eddiebee are you volunteering at San Nicolas de Flue in Ponferrada?
Yes, the first half of June. In 2017, I turned my ankle but continued to walk a few more days. I sent my backpack to Ponferrada to take some weight off, but when I got to El Acebo, I knew that I could not walk further. I caught a taxi to where my bag was, but have always felt that my camino was not complete. I am going to correct that by walking from El Acebo to Ponferrada.

I did not stay at San Nicolas de Flue when I was in Ponferrada. Have you stayed there? Do you have any insights or tips for me? This will be my first time as a volunteer.
