Bilbao to Irún

We will be travelling from Bilbao to Irún on Sunday 7 July to start walking the Norte. I have looked at the time table for alsa.com and there appears to only be a 0430am bus or evening bus which neither are suitable (link below) - this is because it is a Sunday i think. Does anyone know other ways to get to Irún from Bilbao and costs? I am assuming taxi is quite expensive.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
From Madrid I took bus to San Sebastian and the train to Irun. Have a look at that option

Is there not buses at 1100,1330 and 1430 for €8.96?

Also Flixbus go to Hendaye.

There's a bus every hour from Bilbao Airport to Donostia-San Sebastian (https://www.pesa.net/pesa/en/horarios) and from there it's just 30 minutes or less by bus or train to Irun.

Unfortunately there is only the 2 bus times for the Sunday, no matter how many times I check it, so I am not sure where you are getting the additional times. Flixbus also only has the 2 times for Sunday, leaving at 10am and arriving at 12pm - might be a bit late to start walking.

Thanks for the info, however the earliest arrival to commence walking for the day on the Sunday seems to be 1.18pm which is later than we would like to start walking unfortunately.

Fair enough. I must have pressed a wrong button!

Thanks for the link - this seems to be the best option so far, although I can't seem to work out the timetable for the 2 lines that go through to Irun and then beyond. The furthest in advance that I can check is Sunday 7 May and there seems to be 9am departures from Bilbo to San Sebastian - so providing they do have the same timetable for July, this is the best option so far in regards to departure/arrival times to allow us to then start walking for the day.

I will continue to search the internet and let anyone interested to know for their own itinerary, what we have been able to find.

Hi, there trains from Bilbao to San Sebastian every hour, tickets are sold at the station and then in San Sebastian you can take the Euskotrain, it's kind a metro and it takes around 30mins again you need to buy tickets at the station, I did this last year

The train seems to take approx 4 hours to San Sebastián, with renfe. So I think if you can get the bus, it's much quicker.
Our issue is we want to get there early enough to walk from Irún back to San Sebastián - without having to catch the 0430 bus from Bilbao!!!

There is PESA, which goes to San Sebastian/Donostia. From there, you can take the Euskotren or the local bus to get to Irun.
This seems to be the best option for a Sunday which appears to have significantly limited services.
From my searching online it seems that PESA bus to San Sebastián and then either Renfe or Euskotrain to Irún. With all the travel, it appears that the earliest to arrive in Irun would be around 11am. Is this too late to start walking the first stage?

Has anyone heard of blablacar.co.uk bus? This appears to leave Bilbao 8am and arrive in Hendaye (just after Irún) around 9.40am.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
I have never taken the Blablacar bus, but looks like its a good option. You can cross the bridge on foot and enter Irun.
There is enogh light to walk until 20:30h now, so starting late is not a problem. Also, you can stop at Pasajes instead of walking all the way up to Donostia on your first day.

Thanks for the info. Didn't even consider looking around Irún before starting our walk, but that's an option. Perhaps the 0430am bus might be worth considering given the 0630am arrival into Irún.

It's good to know there is enough light until at least evening, although we would well and truely hope to have finished walking by mid arvo.

I will do a bit more research on blablacar as not a lot comes up about them when you search travel options.

Also, consider the weather, which is kind of too early to predict now.
Unless there is a heat anomaly and a heat wave occurs, I would prefer sleeping till 06:30h rather than catching the bus at 04:30h.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

BlaBlaCar is big and popular in France - it's a ride sharing service. I dodn't know they included buses too, but that seems like a good option.

Ha ha I completely agree about the sleep in until 0630! Thanks again for all of your advice.

Thanks for confirming about blablacar. This is reassuring.
The website looks very reputable however Google search of transport to San Sebastián from Bilbao had it further down the search and no other info - so I was a bit sceptical about the validity.
