Of course I am referring to the film "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" which was filmed in Spain. I am particularly interested in the "Sad Hill Cemetary " near Burgos which was constructed by Spanish soldiers for the climactic scene of the film. Has anyone made a side trip there, is it worth it and can you tell me how to get there? My walking partner and I are big fans of that film. "You know what you are Blondie you are a woo o woo o who" People under 50 may not know what I am referring to.

It's about 3km north of Santo Domingo de Silos, close to a track. You can find it on Google Maps. I haven't been, but thought about it a few years ago!
Here's a sat pic.

For an update re the volunteer restoration of the Sad Hill cemetery see this Guardian article.
Thanks mspath, liked the Guardian article, especially the location map. Apparently the reconstructed Sad Hill cemetary is near Burgos about 30 kilometers from the El Camino. Luckily my hiking buddy grew up in Spain and speaks Spanish. Maybe he can negotiate for a taxi to the site. If we go I will post pictures on the forum.

Hi, @Multipurpose.
Yes, I went by there in 2015.
It wasn't intentional, and was a bizarre surprise.

I'd suggest you forget the taxi! It's gorgeous walking!!!
To get there, take the afternoon bus to Santo Domingo de Silos from Burgos. Spend the night and in the morning walk out of SDdS on the GR82 (NOT the Camino del Cid or the Ruta de Ebro). You'll walk steadily uphill on a dirt road, and when it reaches the top of the ridge it drops down to the right into the next valley over. Just keep following the road towards Contreras and the Sad Hill Cemetery will be on your right. It's marked. I can't quite remember, but maybe it's an hour and a half or two hours one way? With views to die for at the top of the hill....

You could take the evening bus back to Burgos or spend another night in SDdS, which is what I would probably do. It's a very nice place, and the evening service with Gregorian chant at the monastery is very special.
Or...;)...you could walk to Covarrubbias on the Ebro and then back to Burgos via the Camino San Olav. It's 3 days of 5-star walking!!
Edit - the light colored road that turns up to the top left of the satellite pic that @Peregrinopaul posted is the GR82.

Thank Rick, I appreciate the links. I leave for my El Camino adventure in two days, very busy with last minute arrangements now. My hiking buddy Sammi and I are both still in favor of visiting the "Sad Hill" site. If we do I will take pictures and post them to the forum. Thanks for the information.

Bumping this thread up because I just watched Sad Hill Unearthed (Desenterrando Sad Hill) on Netflix. A wonderful very touching documentary about the restoration of the site and the dedication of the people involved. Interestingly, during my camino in 2012, I walked briefly with a man from Italy who told me he was taking a detour at Burgos to try to find the site. @VNwalking - Hope I can follow the path you describe above and visit sometime!

It was wonderful, climbing at dawn above Santo Domingo de Silos, and having that incredible landscape open up in front of me. Then dropping down off the ridge into a valley, and past the the huge surprise of this bizarre cemetery. At the time was not restored — and the surprise effect just made me laugh in astonishment.

On the photo of Sierra de la Demanda in the first chain with snow : Peak San Millan (2131 mts) that is the highest point in Burgos province. Behind it is possible to see a bit of peak San Lorenzo (2271), which is the highest of La Rioja
Thank you, Pelegrin!
I've peered at maps trying to identify those peaks, and was never sure. Now I am. Wonderful.
