Booking Accommodation

Hi there

Can anyone recommend any travel agents in Santiago that will book accommodation on my behalf. I have tried the 'Camino Travel Centre' but they are coming back to be with quiet expensive prices. Having been on the Camino last year I am aware of how much it costs!

Thanks
Eimear

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
I have spent the last 2 days online booking ahead, booking.com are very good for the best hotel offers in the big towns on the camino. John brierleys book is excellent for mentioning all the alternatives. On telephoning spain my problem with lots of albergues and pensiones was a lot of them didnt speak english but a number have emails.
I am going may 3rd , 21 days to do from sjpp to santiago cheapest hotel i got was 26 euro and most expensive 48euro

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

It is a challenge , thats part of my reason, im doing this for myself , i did a week last year raising 14 grand for charity. Im able to do it now and these are all my annual holidays so its now or never. People may say i will be going too quickly to notice things but i will meet more than enough people every day.I intend being at my hostel/hotel by 4pm latest every day so loads of time to frequent some hostelry and chat to fellow pilgrims

Hi all,

I've looked quite a bit on this forum for the answer to this question, but with no luck. Can anyone tell me how to book my room in SDC? I have a general idea when I will arrive there (July 14-17) but I'm not sure. This being a Holy Year, I would think that I need a reservation, but I doubt anyone's going to hold a room for me based on an estimated day(s) of arrival. I was thinking of Hostal Suso, btw, based on the recomendations found on this forum.

Thanks for any future (and plenty of past) advice!

Nancy

I can certainly recommend Suso - no online bookings, but you can phone - it worked for me. Very very cool place to stay and location is great!

Its great that you got your bookings made. But isn't SJdPP to Santiago in 21 days a challenge?

I agree, Johnnie. 21 days works out to about 38 km (23.5 miles) per day...every day

I did meet some on the Camino who had goals of this type. I saw them again many days later down the trail as I actually caught up with them. Obviously they were not on schedule.

I walk 16k a day with my work so i will manage it , i like walking uphill , i take it handy downhill. I recommend booking.com , i got my single room in central SDC for 35 euro may 24th so for 40 euro if u book now its feasible i think

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

I understand your concern. You are correct I think - they won't hold open a booking from 14 - 17th July you will need to tell them the day you are arriving. I realise this is difficult but I think you only have three alternatives - manage you camino so you can predict the day you are going to arrive and book accordingly, or take the phone numbers of a few hostales with you and phone them when you get within striking distance such as Sarria or just get to Santiago, leave your rucksack in the Pilgrims Office and trudge round until you find somewhere.

Good luck!

John

I have added another company's name to the post on my blog about booking accommodation. This one might be of special interest to our Aussie members who want to book rooms ahead.

Three weeks to complete the Camino Frances ?
Indeed I met many a person last year who walked 40 kilometers or more per day.
But then they carried a rucksack weighing only 5 kilos.
Some others just had their rucksack transported to the next place of destination.
I even met two Spanish athletes "speed walking" who did the Camino as a kind of training.
It just depends on your outlook of the adventure.
And of course you can always hop on the Alsa bus, if your schedule is too tight.
Buen Camino

As to booking a place upon arrival in Santiago, call the Parador.
It is a five star hotel in the old bishop's palace on the Cathedral Square.
If you share the room with someone else, it turns out to be quiet reasonable.
And it is an unforgettable experience.
Opulent breakfast !
But you need to make a reservation in advance.
Bon appetit !

Hazenklager you are a very knowledgeable guy ,take everything in your stride, i might try that hotel for the breakfast, im staying near the square. I like a irish breakfast, those spanish breakfasts are not good, pastry for brekkie .no good you need a good hearty brekkie and walk it off then

Hi there do you need to book accommodation in advance? I thought we could just try the auberges and get a bed? I am travelling in August so it will be busy. welcome any views on this?

I could not find replies to this (still learning how to use this forum). Regarding Woody's query:
This was my plan also (hoping to start around May 1, 2012). It's looking like a foolish plan, as I read all the comments regarding full aubergues. I plan to always arrive by 4pm (ideally 3pm)--but surely plans often go awry. Taking my iPhone but unsure as to it's capabilities & internet service. I'm sort of resistant to all of the planning ahead, aside from distance and city goals each day. Any thoughts?

Hi Toobizy,
Welcome to the forum.
You have no need to book accommodation. The albergues will not accept bookings :) You just turn up and walking in May you should have no problems finding somewhere to stay.
Some people like the idea of staying in hotels and sending luggage in advance so they have to know where they will be staying, I think they are the minority, though I won't swear to that, certainly everyone I have met on the caminos has taken pot luck and gone to albergues.
It is a lot less hastle not having to be at a certain place every day but just walking in your comfort zone and taking it as it comes.
All the best,
buen camino

My only concern (en este momento) is Orisson, where I see they only have 18 beds. why are others on forum saying "you have to book in advance"? I'm hoping you know better than they do!

Hi Toobizy,
Orisson is an exception to the rule. Do book there in advance. Although even there I think they hold a couple of beds open for last minute pilgrims. After that...no reservations needed:). No worries. I made my first Camino 9 years ago in the high season when there were far fewer albergues than there are today. I had no trouble finding a bed each night. You will be fine.
Buen Camino!
Cathy

Thanks Cathy & Sue for your invaluable experience! Now all I have to do is get my ducks in a row--oh, and tell my 86-year old mother and co-caregiver brother :|
