The past two trips I have booked at roncessvalles but this time I am going with my daughter on the 9th April we are not sure weather to do valcarlos for a night or straight to Roncessvalles or even route napolian. Do you think we need to book at roncessvalles at that time of the year. What do you think fellow pilgrims.;);).

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Where do you plan to stay at Roncesvalles?
We left on 25th April this year having booked ahead. I think it got booked out.
Maybe others have experience of your dates.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Yes the last two times I have booked at the monastry and there always seems to be alot of people there. I think I will play safe and book again.

Book ahead, by all means. In two different places for the two nights, since they won't take your booking for two nights in a row. And as soon as you see clear, phone ahead to cancel the booking that you will not need.

We left St. Jean on April 9 this year taking the Valcarlos route. We did not make reservations in order to leave flexibility to stay either in Valcarlos or continue on to Roncevalles. Arrived around 10 am at Valcarlos and decided to continue to Roncesvalles. Weather coming in was also factor in decision to continue. Got to Roncesvalles early (2-3pm). Appeared to be room at monastery, but we stayed at Hotel Roncevalles. Very nice place and cost effective for 2. Also has nice restaurant. Can book ahead, but again, we did not, and probably because we arrived early, had no problem getting a room.

Be aware that only some of the beds in the Albergue at Roncesvalles are actually bookable. Confusion has arisen from the frequent advice to book ahead. When Roncesvalles website shows "no camas", that only means that there are no 'bookable' beds; not that there are no beds.

A week before Semana Santa you are unlikely to have any difficulty in either finding, or booking, a bed. Whether the Napoleon will be open is entirely dependent on the weather :D

Only bookings that are payed for in advance are accepted at Roncesvalles, so you would have to pay for two nights! As stated before, only a certain amount of beds are available for reservations, most of the beds are for pilgrims arriving during the day.
