Hi folks Ive filled out the online booking form for Roncessvalles but each time I try to send it says the date which is 21st May 2022 is out of season. Any help appreciated.

I just tried it and it worked. There were a couple of missteps I made, though, that I had to go back and correct before the reservation went through.

When I allowed Google to translate the page it messed with the calendar for selecting the reservation date. I then went to the top of the page and selected my preferred language (English). Once I did that, the reservation worked.

The second mistake was not selecting the YEAR '2022' in the calendar, as well as the month and day. I had assumed when I went to 'May' it would also forward to the next year. It doesn't.

After I made all the corrections it accepted my reservation and transferred me to the payment site. I did not proceed at that point. I cancelled the reservation.

Same experience as @davebugg. The first time I forgot to advance the year to 2022 and the system told me that the date of arrival must be after 3/12/2021. When I picked 21 May 2022 as the date and ticked all the boxes required I had no problems to get to the payments page.

Don‘t let your browser do automatic translation from Spanish to English as this causes known problems. Pick English from the menu (top right).

Hi did you get an email confirming your booking immediately?

Ps sorry Im not having a good day lol. Email was in junk folder. Thanks for replying.

Are we booking ahead as routine? No more walk ins? I know that getting there early is key. I’D hate to think I need to book out before I even start

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!

The Roncesvalles albergue have been running their online booking system for several years now. They have beds that can be reserved and beds for walk-in. I can't remember how many beds for each option.

They have 183 beds available during their season which runs from March to November or so, I can't remember exact dates. When more than 183 pilgrims arrive, which happens during peak times, these pilgrims have to find a bed elsewhere.

Know issues with the online booking systems: browser set-up (automatic translation from Spanish to English must be avoided); some foreign credit cards (must be enabled for secure online payment feature required by the payment gateway used by the website).

This may not be a problem for some but using the calendar for reservations caught me once. I wanted to book a train for the second Monday of a month and so on the calendar I went down to day 2 of week 2. Booked fine but then I noticed the date. Spain's calendar starts on a Monday so I ended up with a Tuesday booking. Rather than change things there I just booked an extra day in Barcelona. All was good but I learned to read the date in the box before clicking on it.

Which Albergue are you reserving? Are you using booking.com?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Transport luggage-passengers.
From airports to SJPP
Luggage from SJPP to Roncevalles

I've been posting about this for several years already, and often without being believed, I think 🤭. I live in the EU and have credit cards/payment cards issued by card issuers registered in the EU, for example by Visa Europe. Without going into too many details: many webstores require what is known as two-step authentication; some don't, and this may depend on where your card issuer/bank is located and from where you want to make the purchase; I am now used to, and even expect, two-step authentication for online purchases but today I saw for the first time an announcement that made this very clear. Here's the translation into English:

As part of the new EU Payment Services Directive, additional authentication steps may apply to establish your identity. Please contact your bank or try another payment method if additional authentication fails.
If you can't pay online for your reservation at Roncesvalles or your train ticket at Renfe by credit card, the problem is in all likelihood related to your credit card and to your bank; it is not a problem of the website. It can be solved either by your bank/card issuer who has to enable two step authentication, or you try to pay in a different way, for example through PayPal if that option is available on the website in question.

I usually just email Edurne and get a response right away.

One problem with booking in Spain is sometimes they want a bank transfer, which is almost impossible from the USA. I know people in EU and UK use this method regularly, but in the USA, we are charged pretty big fees and it doesn't feel safe handing out our bank acount info. It would be really helpful if albergues would use Venmo or Paypal for us.

Yeah, the time I tried Bank of America was charging $40 for the service. If you went through Western Union online it became $10 as I remember but you needed to get an account setup first and you had to fill in all the information about the transfer. Also the US government wanted information so they could check that you weren't funding a terrorist group.
