Botafumeiro 8 December

Hi there. I spoke with staff at the cathedral who advised that the Botafumeiro would be used at 12 mass tomorrow (8 December). On the last feast day I think it was around 15 minutes before the mass time and a few pilgrims missed it because they arrived around 12 so probably best to arrive early. There were also people working on the crib at the back of the cathedral today so it might be worth a look. Buen Camino . El

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
December 8 is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (conception of the Virgin Mary), and a BIG feast day on the Catholic calendar.

I am just leaving for Mass here, as it is also a Holy Day of Obligation for observant Catholics.

That explains why they are using the botafumeiro.

If anyone views / viewed it, report here on renovation progress and conditions in the cathedral please.

Thanks

I was in the Cathedral last Friday (1st) for midday pilgrim Mass, which I concelebrated. There was a group of pilgrims from somewhere in Galicia and they got a mention and thanks for their 'provision' of the botafumeiro after the Mass. I believe I am something of a 'good luck charm' for the botafumeiro (even though I am not sure I really NEED to see it more than once) as I think I have concelebrated Mass about a dozen times over the years and seen botafumeiro used eight times. I have several times got to put the incense into the thurible, which is done by the principal celebrant and another two or three priests. Really and truly this does not excite me - BUT my young nephew who walked with me a couple of years ago thought it was uber cool!! From the altar you have a very good view of proceedings although there is the strongest possible injunction given before Mass in the sacristy about taking photographs. I believe once on a Friday I saw the botafumeiro used twice on one day - there was an Archbishop from Switzerland I believe at the midday Mass and this was in the time of the regular botafumeiro on Friday evenings.
The cathedral looked in good shape, in that there is less scaffolding and screening over the front outside and at the present there doesn't seem to be any work going on inside, not noisy work anyway. There was still screening covering the main door on the inside. It is a year since I had been there and I think it is subjectively convincing that progress is being made!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Noon mass today with the archbishop was standing room only, and not much of that - I think people were still queuing to get in after mass started. I think it was more crowded today even than the time I was there for midnight mass on Christmas Eve. Perhaps the"macropuente" (a new word for me) of the two public holidays this week has upped the numbers.

It's nice that the towers, when you first see them from 5-6km out on the Sanabrés, are now bare of scaffolding, even if it's still visible once you're in the praza, on the lower parts of the cathedral.

Internally the Pórtico da Gloria end is still cut off (currently with the huge Christmas crib at that end).

On November 26th, 2017 6:00 pm Mass it did not swing; nor on November 27th at 12:00. It's not taken down yet. Here is a picture of the outside. I didn't notice any changes to the inside since I last saw it in June of 2016.P1000722.JPG

In addition to he above there is also scaffolding above the altar but the altar is in full view. 8 December mass seemed much busier than it was for the Feast of Christ the King.
