Does anyone happen to know if a donation has been made for the botafumeiro to swing tomorrow (4th May) or Saturday (5th May)? I've tried emailing the cathedral but to date have no reply.

Hi @Smiggle That info isn't made public normally. You will need to chance it and simply turn up for the pilgrim's mass. Welcome to Santiago, SY

Are both the lunchtime and evening mass pilgrims mass? Im just trying to decide if I should get up super early to make it to Santiago for lunchtime.

It can swing at any mass. I have seen it three times in a day! (Yes, I had a bit of extra time in Santiago that trip.)

I have to say that I kind of love the fact that it doesn't always swing and that you never know when it will. The first time I arrived in Santiago, there was no botafumeria at the mass. The next year, I watched in anticipation as I saw the red-robed tiraboleiros quietly gathering and it was so inspiring for the swinging of the botafumeria to be a surprise.

I've heard that if you see that the first two rows are roped off "Reserved", that's a pretty good indication that a group has paid to see it swing.

If you take the cathedral/museum tour in the morning and the incense charcoal is lit, it will swing!
