I love the Brierley Maps. I make notes on them.

When I first walked the CF, like many back then, I, too, carried the full Brierly guide. As a book, it’s not particularly big, bulky or heavy. The maps are great and I referred to them many times a day. However, his commentaries were also well worth reading. The one thing that I didn’t want to do was miss something. Today, I almost entirely rely on apps, particularly Mapy.cz for the daily trip course. With the gps feature, I can also see my exact location. The apps seem to have imho replaced the need for paper maps. However, if I were to carry a small book, it would still probably be Brierly’s full guide so as to get the historical and cultural information that one cannot get just from a map.

I had the kindle version of the full guide book and this hard copy map book for my camino. Loved the hard copy and used it every single day (still using it at home to plan for next one).

Goodness, I wish I had kept my first Brierley Camino Francés book. As inexperienced Pilgrim and worried about everything, I torn out the finished sections every night. In SdC, there was only the section about the city and it wasn’t a collectible. This plus my half toothbrush and inadequate towel were recycled.This part of ‘less is better’ strategy should have scrapped.

On my first Camino I occasionally saw pages of the leading guidebook of the day which had been torn out and used as toilet paper by someone ahead of me. I assume they were being used in geographical order but I didn't fancy confirming that personally.

The toilet paper business was long before Brierley's first guide was published. It was the guide by Elias Valiña. Very easy to recognise because it had an unusual page size and proportions and some very distinctive maps.

I knew that Elias Valiña had given so much to the Camino in so many ways, but this is a new one for me.

There are mixed opinions on the Brierley guides; but I’ve never seen them described as absorbant.
